Computer/computer science jobs?

I want to get into a computer career, but there are so many out there. I was wondering if anyone who is in one of those fields could give me a little advice, and tell me a little about what they do.

I was told years ago, I think it even more true now. If your thinking career, you should think of your computer education/training as a tool, and you will need to learn other skills and apply them to your true career path. Another way to put it is if you major in computer science you need to minor in some other field. Pick a focus, maybe some Business or Engineering skill or a particular application (data security, GIS, robotics, web design) and make sure you develop the additional skill needed for that area.

I suggest you look at the BLS website Occupational Outlook Handbook. Here are some pages related to some computer careers.

Computer programming:

Sixty-seven percent of computer programmers held a college or higher degree in 2004; nearly half held a bachelor鈥檚 degree, and about 1 in 5 held a graduate degree.
Employment is expected to grow much more slowly than that for other computer specialists.
Prospects likely will be best for college graduates with knowledge of a variety of programming languages and tools; those with less formal education or its equivalent in work experience are apt to face strong competition for programming jobs.

Computer Software Engineers
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos267.htm

Computer software engineers are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the 2004-14 period.
Very good opportunities are expected for college graduates with at least a bachelor鈥檚 degree in computer engineering or computer science and with practical work experience.
Computer software engineers must continually strive to acquire new skills in conjunction with the rapid changes that are occurring in computer technology.

Computer Systems Analysts
Employers generally prefer applicants who have at least a bachelor鈥檚 degree in computer science, information science, or management information systems (MIS).
Employment is expected to increase much faster than the average as organizations continue to adopt increasingly sophisticated technologies.
Job prospects are favorable.
