Computer Science Majors?

Hi. I have declared computer science as my major. I have no idea what jobs will be avaliable when I graduate. People with this degree can u tell me what you job is and what u do? And maybe the starting salary? Thanks!!!

I have a Computer Science degree and have a number of friends with both Computer Science and Computer Engineering degrees. Many of these friends (and myself) have jobs as Software Engineers. This was Money magazines's top career this past year. See this article for salary info, etc.: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/...

Other alternatives with a Computer Science major could be anything from Research/Education, System Administrators, or any other type of Information Technology job.
just helping the community...
I have a job in information technology sales that requires me to know a lot about computer hardware and software. There are many jobs in information technology- developers, systems engineers, consultants, sales reps, licensing specialists, etc. Your position will dictate your salary. Consultants can make around $75-$100 an hour depending on their expertise. Developers and Engineers are usually paid based on skill and certification. Sales reps are usually paid on commission so the harder you work, the more you earn. Some sales reps in my company make a six- figure salary.
Don't be fooled. There are very few jobs out there in CS. The vast majority of CS work is done in India and by Indians in the US on H-1B visas. I have a BSCS degree and haven't seen any available CS work in 6 years. The last I heard, there were over 500K highly skilled CS and IT people that were unemployed and looking for work in the US.

I suggest that you check the employment listings in your local paper to find out exactly what is being offered in your area. Beware the fake ads, they are commonplace. Also, the CS field is the only field where "must have 3-5 years experience" means exactly that. People with 6 years experience will not be considered.

I strongly suggest that you pick a different major.

PS- There is a reason why CS is no longer a limited access program in most colleges. The guys that are smart enough to get in to the program are also smart enough to recognize that its not a good program to get into.
