Does anyone have advice for an aspiring Ultrasound Tech.Do I need to become a Rad Tech 1st? If so is it safe?

I currentley work as an administrative assistant which pays lousy unless you have a BA. Last year I returned to school after 10 years (I'm 35). I want to start a new career asap as I am a single mom with 3 kids and time is tight. I was considering nursing because I like working around people but I got kind of turned off from hearing about all of the gross stuff you see/clean up etc. So now I am considering a career as an Sonographer. I wonder if I will be able to get a job if the school is not ADRMS accredited. There are only two accredited schools where I live and they are really far. What about career college etc? Any suggestions on other careers in healthcare? I have no experience in this field but I am a decent math and science student.

I wouldn't waste my time on a non-accredited school. Upon graduating from a non-accredited program, you cannot take your registry exams (to receive your license) until you have completed a full year of work in the field of sonography. The problem is, you will have a hard time finding a job in the field if you are not licensed.

You do not need to be a radiologic technologist before entering an ultrasound program.

Are you sure there are only two accredited programs in your state? Try the following link, and search "diagnostic medical sonographer" and your state.

For other careers in the health care field, check out this site. It might give you some ideas!

You must first get an associates degree in radiology first. Ultrasound is a specialty field secondary to Xray. Best of luck to you.

No u dont have to do radiology first!!!

Here check this link http://www.asrt.org/content/RecruitmentR...

Als o you can go to www.bls.gov to check out what they have

GO to a accredited school it better Most Community colleges are accredited and a whole lot cheaper.

Career college dont do it.

If your good at chemistry try nuclear medicine

Also Respirtory therapist and Phyiscal therapist assistant are very good careers.

Most of the health care fields are a good bet to get a job making at lease 40'000 a year after you graduate

Some sonographers after they specialze are making at least 60 to 80 grand not bad money at all.

Check your local community college for a list of health care careers they offer these careers often cost like 4000 dollars or less for 2 years of schooling and you can make 40000 or more right out of school.

best bargain in higher education is health care programs at local community colleges!! for return on investment!!

Also if your community college doesnt have it try a hospital based program Just check at the local hospitals!!

Dont do career college too expensive and often just a rip-off!!
Dont do X-ray it pays the least Sonography, radation therapy, nucleur medicine pay a lot more

List of accredited programs can be found here:
http://www.caahep.org/Find_An_Accredited...

Good luck to you as you continue your education!!

Dont get the Rad. tech degree first. contrary to popular belief, there is a HUGE difference in the two. its like comparing occupational therapist to a physical therapist. and trust me, the program is worth it.
dont go for the un-accredited program. if you want the REAL experience, go to the accredited program.
hope this helps. good luck to you and your family!
