Pre Nursing student/medical field jobs? |
I'm taking my prereq right now for Nursing. The problem is I'm scared I'm going to get to attached to the patients when I'm finally a nurse. And that would tare me to pieces very quickly. I mainly want to work with sexual health/stds/stis patients/people. Not so much in a hospital. Are there any other medical field carrers I should explore before I make the set decision on nursing? Any input would be wonderful. Developing a rapport with patients is an integral part of being a good medical professional. Yes, it is tough to see them go, especially if you deal in a ward where patients often die (ICU, etc.). But don't be discouraged from bonding with patients. I did my masters thesis on STD health education. I would recommend you do something similar. Volunteer at your local health department, Planned Parenthood or women's health clinic. They are always looknig for people to help out (even if they might not pay you). Consider a career in public health. Public health nursing is a great career choice if you want to be a nurse, but don't want to be chained to a hospital. PHNs do house visits and a lot of health ed one on one with patients. And if nursing isn't quite what you want, then try community health or health promotion. Source(s): I work for your friendly local health department. dfa Death is part of life.
