Nurse Anesthetist Help?

Should I attend a college and get my bachelors and become a registered nurse and then get a job as a nurse, then go back to college to get a masters in nurse anesthetist? Or should I just do it all at once?

In the US, it is required to have a bachelors degree in nursing and work 1-2 years minimum as a critical care nurse (ICU, ER, cath lab, flight nurse) to be considered for admittance into a nurse anesthesia program. Most nurse anesthesia programs have you earning a masters of science in nursing degree, and then you take a certification exam to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist. A great thing to do is to work full time to accrue your time as a bedside nurse and take classes part time at the masters of nursing level while you are waiting to apply to an anesthesia program. Good nursing grad classes to take while waiting to apply to anesthesia school would be research and statistics, policy, theory, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and assessment. However, most nursing graduate programs will only let you into select classes without being in a specific program. This is a great way to get classes out of the way and show any school you apply to that you are dedicated to learning and capable of studies at the graduate level. Just remember that not all credits will transfer all the time, and some schools require courses that others do not. Getting general classes out of the way helps in the long run when you are in an anesthesia program because the load isn't quite as overwhelming when trying to balance class work and clinical.
I believe most NA programs actually require you to have a year of nursing under your belt before entering a NA program.

Im not sure where your from, but, I know in Australia that you have to do a postgraduate year of nursing (considered to be your 4th year, even though youve graduated) before you can do a specialist area. Hope this helps and good luck with your nursing!
