Job as a nurse in Special Care Baby Unit?

I was looking into midwifery as a new change in career - I can train and have looked into it and that is all fine. I was wondering what qualifications you would need to work in the SCBU of a hospital. My daughter was born prematurely and I would like to look into this. Where she was born they also said how understaffed they were. Can anyone help?

To work in SCBU you either need to be a Qualified Midwife or Paediatric Nurse (both take 3 years at university in the UK) OR you can train as a Midwifery / Health Care Assistant and work under the qualified staff. The main difference is Midwives and Nurses can give medication but the Assistants can't.

Working in SCBU can be a very rewarding Job but it can also be heart breaking. It's an emotionally tiring job but if you think you can cope with the work, you experience will make you one of the best for the job as you can understand how other parents feel.

I wish you all the best. Source(s): Placement in SCBU as part of my University course.
