How good of a job is being a nurse? |
I want to be a RN at a hospital someday..how is it working with that type of job? My mom was a nurse or director of nurses for 30 years-it was very rewarding and she loved her job. But you have to deal with lots of paperwork. It depends on how you deal with stress if you like working with patients and their families-some people thrive on it, others get burned out. When she went back to work after having kids, she worked rotating shifts, which I now realize was rough on someone taking care of a family and home too. Good luck! it`s a great job VERY stressfull.........I work at Vanderbilt and see how bad some of these nurses have it day-to-day My mom is an RN, now working for an insurance company.. you know that 800 # on the back of your insurance card that the hospital has to call before they admit you??? Those are nurses that they talk to.. My mother trains those nurses for one of the insurance companies. when I was in grade school I used to walk over to the hospital and wait the extra hour until she got off work and ride home with her. The work looked pretty nasty.. to a kid. And it never seemed to bother my mom.. she said you have to concentrate on the injury, not on the person.. we can fix the injury.... Then a friend of mine got hurt in an auto accident. I was waiting for mom to get off work when they brought my friend into the ER.. My mom was OR supervisor, and when someone had to go to surgery, she would check them in ER to make sure they were ready for an emergent run for the OR. When she got to the ER.. I was waiting in the waiting area with a soda..she smiled, waived.. then ran for a curtain.. then I heard her scream.. that was when she saw Wendy. I didn't know until later that it was my friend. The ER doctor took her to surgery, mom was getting sick. That was the only time she couldn't concentrate on the injury.. she knew the patient. Wendy had been at sleepovers at our house, b-day parties... name it. But over all Mom says that it is the most rewarding things she's ever done. The only reason she's at a desk now... hip replacement... to difficult to stand for long surgeries. But any honest doc will tell you.. nurses run the hospital. they inform the docs of potential problems, call for a change in meds, or a reaction to meds, notify families, sometimes just listen. There is a reason they are called angels of mercy. You have to love helping people, understand that not everyone gets better, Long hours, sometimes low pay. Try to be an CNA or HHA 1st. Then after a year you will know if the health care field is for you. I have been a nurse for 14 years. It's great. There are a lot of different things that you can do being a RN. I recommend getting a bachelors of science of nursing. |
