Is being a nurse as great as they make it sound??? (please read the details)?

I've been trying to decide what associate's degree I should get that would help me get a good paying job. I've picked either nursing or network administration. The thing is that I'm more of a type a person that would do network administration, and not really a nursing type. But to get a good paying job in network adm. I'll have to get a bachelor's, and I'm looking for something quicker then that. Nursing doesn't require bachelor's and pays a lot, plus there are a million jobs out there. What should I do?? Any nurses out there, did you change your mind after becoming one?

It shouldn't be about the money, if you are not the "nursing type" please don't bother with nursing. I think you may have been misinformed, nurses are severly underpaid considering the things we do. It is a physically and emotionally demanding job. I work in Labour and delivery and although there are a lot of satisfaction that you get out of delivering babies I can tell you that last night alone I...

- Worked for 12 straight hours with no break and very little down time.

- Have bruises on my arms from when a patient was getting an epidural and was clinging to me for dear life.

-Spent 2 hours pushing with a patient that continously defected in the bed (it happens) and can you imagine the smell in that room

-Was yelled at by one husband because there were no private rooms available on the post partum floor

-Yelled at by another patient because the anethetist wasn't there yet to do her epidural yet (we can't control these things)

-Yelled at by the anethetist because the patient wouldn't stay still

-held a 22 week gestation perfectly healthy baby as it died in my arms because the parents didn't want it

-was covered in blood and amniotic fluid during a c-section because the surgeon sometimes gets a little messy

Should I go on?? But the fact is I love my job and this is an everyday occurence. If you think you could deal with this kind of stuff day in and out, by all means become a nurse. But if this isn't for you, it never will be no matter how much money they offer you. Source(s): Labour & delivery RN (cutern4u@hotmail.com if you have any other questions.
Me! I was a nurse, and I am now going to school to get my accounting degree. It is hard physical labor and Very political.
My wife loves being a nurse. She is an RN.
But you just said you are NOT the nursing type so why would you even consider it. Yes, the starting pay is good, but you have to work 12 hours shifts, deal with really sick patients, get crapped on, vomited on, peed on. If you don't think you could be dedicated to THAT then please be a network administrator.
I am not a nurse, but I can tell you something about the computer industry. It means that you will have to spend much of your free time and dollars for the rest of your life taking classes and certification exams to stay technically current.

Think about this, when you are a Mom and trying to do Mom things and wife things and work things and now throw in student things.

Technology changes and yours skills will get old and obsolete, it is a tough field to be in and many more of the jobs, including things like network admin are being outsourced to India, where the people work for a a 1/4 of what we get here.

I have an MS in Comp Sci and while I worked 50 hours a week and was a single Mom I became obsolete. Now I am unemployed after over 20 years in the field.
I would do what is going to make you happy. Start there first.

If you are interested in Network Admin work, check into certification classes (or buy some books and study) then take the tests. Not sure on what it takes to become certified in Nursing, but I know several people who have become certified (not a nursing degree, but certification for aid work) and it is a VERY tough job.
