Artist or nurse?

okay, well, i'll be starting college pretty soon, but im not too sure what i want to do yet. I mean, my parents and family are all telling me to be a nurse so that i can afford a house and live luxuriously and all of that. However, my heart isnt really into that. I find that i LOVE art. I cant get enough of it. I love all aspects too. I like to cook, write, draw, paint, sculpt and sing. GAH! Its been surrounding me my whole life and i can honestly say that i'd love to wake up for the rest of my life and go to work to draw. haha. but, im not sure if thats enough of a reason to pursue it as a career seeing as i might not make enough money doing that. Plus, i dont even know where to go for jobs in that field.

So what should i do? Pursue a career in medicine or the arts?

Nurses can make good money, but the hours are bad and you have to deal with sick people all the time.

There are several great career options in the arts! It's a pretty wide field.

I myself knew I wanted to go into the arts. I also knew I had to be realistic, and that I had to find something that would pay me well enough to take care of myself.

I chose Graphic Design.

Graphic designers can also make good money, and ultimately have the potential to make more than a nurse.

Graphic design is such a wide field. You could work for a newspaper, a magaizne, and ad agnecy, create web pages, the list goes on from there. (I work for a printing company as an in-house designer!)

Depending on who you work for and how ambitious you are, there might be some late nights and some weekends, as this is a competitive market. But there is also the potential to be a freelance designer and work for yourself out of your own home, or start a company of your own!

Just ask your parents how proud they would be if they had a self-employed/business owner in the family!

Photography is a great option. You can almost always find work, lets face it, every body likes to have here picture taken, but this field has an even greater potential for being your own boss!

I knew people in college that were already making money by photographing weddings on the weekends!

You could work for and possibly start your own portrait studio, or be a photojournalist for a newspaper, be a product photographer...Lots of options here.

Art education is a little tougher to break into, as when funding gets cut, sometimes the art programs are the first to go, and you might not make a mint, but if you find teaching others other rewarding this might be the job for you.

As with all of these fields, you can always continue to create your own work and find places to show and sell your work on the side. You just might eventually make enough to attain your dream of doing nothing but art all day!

I know you want to please your parents, but ultimately you need to do what's right for you.

Money isn't everything, and if you don't think nursing will make you happy, don't do it!
if you can, do both but if i were in your place i'd pursue medicine first and then arts...when, you pursue medicine you'd get a good job and you could probably earn the money for arts...does that sound okay?
Well, I think this question is two-fold. One would be what you should study, or major in, and the other would be what you should do for a career.

What you should study in college should be the primary thing on your mind right now. What have you gotten good grades in so far? What do you excel at? This will probably dictate what you want to study.

Then, honestly, you can pursue whichever career strikes your fancy. With something like nursing, you need to be 100% sure that's what YOU want to do, because a Nursing major has competitive enrollment, and it takes a lot of money and time.

Where did your family get the idea you need to be a nurse? Was it from you, or out of thin air?

I would just take life one step at a time. I guarantee you you will change over the next 4(-ish) years. I always wanted to be a medical doctor, but I might get a PhD instead. And what am I studying? French, because that's what I love!
There are lighter jobs in the nursing field perhaps that should keep you gainfully employed as I am sure your parents are hoping for you. A Certified Nurses Aide is a rewarding job especially in the home care field. The Red Cross offfers a rapid training course and can lead you on your way.
Don't ever stop painting, cooking all the things you mentioned
because you really won't get motivated if your forced into a job you don't like.
Try music too Sara Evans All I waited 4... lyrics and well take the singing into a depth that explores your creativity.
Do both and all of it! Enjoy! Aloha
I kinda understand your situation, for me it was english or nursing. I would say that it depends on which area of arts you are interested in. Choose an area, go to any college website and usually they have possible careers listed for every major that they have. For me, I had looked up the possible careers for an english major and was pleasantly surprised to find over 50 possible careers listed. Now if that is also the case for you, for whatever area of art you decide to go into then i say go for it. If not, I would say go for the nursing. My sister also went for nursing, she was able to finish her schooling in 4 years, and presently works 3 days (12 hour shifts) at her local hospital with full benefits and a salary well over $55,000. She has 3 to 4 days left of the week to pursue any other interests she has or increase her education in nursing. I'd say thats not too bad. Well, it's up to you really but whatever you do, make ABSOLUTELY sure that YOU are satisified. Its not your parents life, its yours.
i agree with the people above me go for medicine to make sure you have a sounding career that u can rely on for food and money and if u still dont like ur job u can apply to an art school like the art center or to the art institute they do a very good job in helping their students find jobs in the art industry but its very hard to make a sounding career in art becuz theres a lot of competition and many do fail, i going through the same thing u are i want to be a game designer (they get paid 80,000 dollars a year!) but u cant just apply to a game company and ask to be a game designer u have to work ur way up but my parents are very skeptical becuz they dont want me to be some kind of loser living on their couch, they have even suggested to me to become a counselor...who in the world wants to be a counselor for the rest of life! im torn between being a historian or a game designer and there are times that i find myself on the verge of tears becuz its what i want to do, its wat i want to become. i as well will luv to wake up every morning knowing that im going to work to do something that i luv but who can blame them they only want the best for you but if u truly want to be an artist then follow ur heart im pretty sure they'll support u no matter wat
