Nursery Nurse? |
Im interested in this career? For nursery nurses only! What all do you do for your job? Do you receive "specialty pay" since you are a nursery nurse or are you paid as a RN? How long have you been in this field? Pro's and Con's to your job? Thanks in advance! I am a postpartum nurse, sometimes I work in the nursery. I assume you mean a well baby nursery, the NICU (neonatal ICU) is an entirely different specialty for premature and sick babies. Nursery nurses for well babies are not "specialty" nurses, sometimes specialty pay is given to L&D, adult ICU, ER & NICU. Some hospitals no longer have well baby nurseries as the trend is for "rooming in". Other hospitals have well baby nurseries where the babies stay at night for phototherapy, for a brief observation, for first assessment, bath and 2 hr transition period after the c-section or simply if the moms are tired and want to sleep. In our hospital, the nursery nurse checks the meds in the crash cart and keeps the nursery clean, she babysits all babies in the nursery, does baby vitals every 4-8 hrs depending on how new they are, one nurse can take care of eight infants at a time. She also cares for well infants that need phototherapy for jaundice. Also, at our hospital the well baby nurse does all the admissions for the c-sections, the ALS nurse brings them straight from the OR all bloody and goopy, we weigh them, do the first assessment and put them in a warmer, when they are stable and warm, they get their first bath, and if still doing fine they go out to see mom. I would say if you are in the nursery and not the nicu it woud be very fun. Being in the nicu would break my heart. |
