Returning to school (30 yrs 2kids) which program to enter, Nursing, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. |
I thought I wanted nursing, easy entry into program, 2 years in school for a RN and then tons of job openings and I could work around my children's schedules...but I would like to do a bit more than be a nurse. Instead of going all out and trying out the MCAT I thought being a PA would be the right answer for me. The downside to that is the program length and price is much higher...of course the pay at the other end is higher also. There is a good PA program here where I live so distance isn't the issue...I'm hoping I can get some good insights from those of you already working in the field! Thanks so much! i am going through the same dillemma right now! having a hard time choosing between nursing and PA. but, i think PA school is the way to go. but remember, if it's been over 10 years since you've taken your science classes, you will have to retake them before you can even apply. here is a good site for PA's and future PA's: http://www.physicianassistantforum.com/f... Avoid a 2 year RN program. Most medical facilities require a 4 year BS . You sound as if you are leaning towards the PA and a noble field indeed. Pay is good too! Look into the program offered and also financial help as well. There are many grants out there for women. Check your local library, They keep a big book of grants available or you can check your local government offices and internet sites too If finances aren't an issue then you have to ask yourself DO YOU HAVE THE TIME to devote yourself to this field. You will be studying many long hours beyond your classroom time. Enlist the aid of your children. I did and they were very helpful . They would quiz me for a test or we used homemade flash cards. They were proud of their momma when she graduated too! P.S. I juggled full time schooling, parenting as a single mother, a fulltime job and the local ambulance squad --- You can do what ever your heart desires in life Good luck in your career choice. Been there... done that! |
