I was born to make funny tv commercials but I need to start somewhere What type of marketing job should I seek

There are so many different kinds of jobs in the advertising field. I am just looking for some help so I can begin utilizing the talents that make me a well-hidden marketing god. I am looking on Monster, but what is the name of the actual position that I'm talking about? Help, thanks, and watch for me on TV in a few years.

Haha, listen to me son. I work in the advertising industry where we "make funny tv commercials" among lots of other things that you have no idea about. You know how many idiots we get off the street saying they think they were born to make TV commercials?

There isn't even a job description for what you want. Commercial creation is not some "well-hidden marketing god" sitting at home coming up with the next best thing. It's a collaboration of the top minds in the field and that's not even all they do.

I can tell from your question you will never make it in this field. Not everyone can be an astronaut when they grow up son. My suggestion is to beg the manager at McDonalds for a job. Maybe you can come up with a genius marketing campaign to keep the workers from killing themselves.

Good luck,

Kevin Kingston
VP Marketing

Make funny commercials now and you'll get both the job and the career.

Hey, the job you're looking for is as a copywriter or an Art Director. I assume, however that you're interested in writing or concepting the idea.

It's a very competitive market, what you should do is find a couple agencies that interest you. Figure out who their clients are then write a couple ideas for them.

You'll be asked for a portfolio or "book" both of which are a compilation of your work and ideas.

Good luck.

By the way I just saw the answer prior to mine. That Kenneth dude is clearly a hack who apparently has insecurity issues. He probably works in database marketing.

If you want to be involved in creating commercials go get it.

Assistant Copywriter or copywriter intern. But make sure it's the job you really want though because there is more stability in account side and likely more money - same goes for ad sales minus the stability aspect. Unless your portfolio is amazing going in don't be surprised if you have to spend a few years on crappy accounts before you get to make tv ads for beer companies. Also I've heard ad school is all but essential these days to make sure your book and your rolodex are solid enough to make a career as a creative. It costs a lot of money just like any other graduate degree. I opted to go account side and enjoy it, but still harbor 'what ifs' occasionally about the creative track. So I say if it's what you really want to do then DO IT but understand the trade-offs. And ask a few unbiased third parties other than mom and your girlfriend if you're really the ad writing god you think you are.

You don't want a marketing title. You want to be copywriter or designer. Those are the two people that work as a team to write and design ads for tv, print, web, etc...

If you want to be considered for that kind of job, you need a portfolio of funny ads. You have to take a class. You will need lots of samples of very good work in order to get interviewed and hired.

If you can't take a class, team up with a graphic designer and work up a portfolio on your own. Then try to get someone in the field to critique your work, give you feedback, etc...

Once your work is professional enough, you're good to go!
