What exactly is a sales and marketing job?

What would I be dealing with? Phoning customers etc.? That sort of thing?

It really depends on the company and what the product is.

In some cases, selling means cold calling/going to appointments, etc. For some, it means handling in-bound leads and following up on them. And still others, it means not only closing the business, but continuing to follow up and cultivate the relationship so you can continue to get incremental business.

Marketing is even more all over the place. It can mean all communications going to the outside world. It can mean events, setting them up/attending/getting speakers secured. It can lean more to the public relations end of things. It can mean running the website. Supporting sales. Providing them with the materials/messaging they need to promote the brand. Marketing helps put the face and consistency around a brand/company/product. It can also mean research.. Marketing is really all over.
