Applying for a job withing marketing ?

I dont know a lot about marketing but i'm looking for a job at the moment. This seems like one of them "too good to be true" type of things. What do you think?

http://www.scotcareers.co.uk/jobsearch/p...

I don't think it sounds too good to be true, but I think you will find that they probably pay a very low base salary which may or may not be offset by very good commission structures. But, if you're young and don't have much experience, the chance of training may make it worth your while even if the salary is low.

However, if you read if carefully you'll see that it's a sales job, not a marketing job (there are two positions - sales or leadership - but if you don't have experience in that area it's unlikely you'd get a leadership position). You need to be aware of what skills and traits a salesperson needs - for example, if the position involves cold-calling, you need to remain enthusiastic and cheerful even if you're faced with rejection after rejection, because if you don't, you're going to be rejected even more.

Basically, if you think it sounds like something that you'd be interested in, then go ahead and apply. Remember even if you attend an interview, you're still not under any obligation to take the job. In fact if you like, you can treat the interview as a fact-finding mission to find out more about it.

The only thing that I would be wary of is if they ask you to work a period for free as a "trial" or an "unpaid training period". Some employers do this, and whilst it is legal, I've heard stories of them using it as a way to get free labour for a week - they have no intention of taking you on permanently.

most time marketing is another name for telesales, in Scotland, mainly Glasgow there is lots of telesales jobs - Weatherseal, Glasgow, Space Kitchens, Glasgow, Virgin Network Glasgow and all the others like Anglian Windows and First Direct in Hamilton all do marketing/telesales, these jobs are all easy to get into but hard to keep and they can be very demanding and brain destroying, Good luck.

Hmm... Telesales dressed up to be something else.

Nothing wrong with telesales, but you probably want to go for a company proud enough to do what it says on the tin.

Take a course such as CIM Certificate in Marketing: recognised all over, part-time study and if you can integrate it with work, your new employer might pay!

I'd also think about which area of marketing you are interested in and why. To pick two examples, Sales Analysis is poles apart from Market Research.
