When you hear about retraining people who have lost jobs...?

...do you really think that the youth uber-alles employment market is going to accept older people doing jobs that the kids are trained for, even if the kids aren't so great at them?

I'm a highly qualified software guy, and it took me three years to find a job, despite being up-to-date and knowledgeable. The employers would rather hire a twenty something they can abuse and then fire when they get to be a decrepit 27, than an older worker, who may be good, but who demands greater salary and benefits.

Do you think, as I do, that the job market is structured to support the whole college loan credit scam? If so, older workers being retrained is fairly worthless. The employers will always choose a younger, more maleable and gullible worker.

What are your experiences in this.

sgt moto. take some reading comprehension lessons.

I currently teach at a community college level. You have not thought this through.

I have the same problems you do, I am a Loan Officer with 10 years of experience. I have found employers to be hard to deal with. My experience and skill sets are easily transferable but employers are reluctant to take me on over a younger kid out of college.

I muscled up and found oppurtunities that would work and use my skills. Im a results oriented kind of guy. I guess you have to get creative and find a place where you are appreciated.

welcome to age discrimination. your absolutely right.

sorry but I'm at the other side of this. overqualified and inexperienced. have applied for 200+ jobs in the past 18 months,.No replies to any applications and 2 interviews.

Don't demand greater salary and benefits

What you say has some truth to it. Stereotypically speaking, older people usually are less inclined to learn new things and not as easily influenced as the younger generation. Knowing this, the older generation has to adapt and combat this way of thinking by showing the intitiative to learn. Take some college courses at the community college or volunteer for different assignments. Never stop learning. This is how to stay competitive with todays market.

Communication is paramount. Learn to communicate effectively with these younger managers. You can be the most qualified person for any position, but will never get the job if you can't effectively communicate with people.

Good luck, sir.

Times are a changing as an aging population means employers will be forced to hire older workers, and their (human resources) thinking on the vaulable experience of older candidates being wasted is changing fast, this has been my experience in Australia in the last ten years or so.

I see this all the time, especially in IT, and especially when it comes time for layoffs. It's an ugly game.
