Is the question in Cleveland...are there just not enough jobs to go around?

I have a great professional job...but finding a second job for my little brother ( customer service, hospitality, etc. ) is terrible ...Why is the Cleveland job market soooo bad?

I don't live anywhere near Cleveland but I did a little digging through some economic databases I have access to and it seems to me that the main problem in Cleveland is competition for the jobs.

Like you said, you have a great professional job...I'm assuming you have a bachelor's degree or higher?

...if so then you represent less than 12% of the population in Cleveland. Compare that to the 29% in, for example, Columbus or the 35% (or higher) in Denver CO with bachelor's degrees or higher, and it makes sense that your brother is having a hard time finding a job in a market flooded with people looking for entry-level work (esp. in customer service, retail, hospitality, etc...).

I didn't dig a lot deeper than this but I'd imagine that if you had a bachelors' degree, especially in a growing field like technology, nursing/health care, etc...you can pretty much write your ticket in Cleveland...on the other hand, if you don't, you're competing with nearly 90% of the population looking for jobs that don't require a degree! I can't imagine how ANY town could create enough jobs for this many non-degreed people...without enough degreed professionals demanding services from local businesses, what exactly are businesses supposed to hire people to do in the way of customer service, hospitality, or anything else?

If you were in Denver, your brother could probably find a hotel job or a job in retail that pays at least $10/hour in a few days (especially if he has some specialized skills)...but you'd be in the position of competing with over 1/3 of the population looking for professional jobs!

Don't fret, my friend. It's not just you, but it's EVERYBODY! The job market in Detroit doesn't look so promising either! You're better off relocating. Preferably to the West Coast. My recommendation is Seattle. I've been there, and the market is sooooo promising!

it's not bad but really it's who you know.i know some people in higher up positions so if you want help, you know my e-mail.let's see what we both can do for him.

I can't imagine there's a big hospitality industry in Cleveland. I don't remember the last time I heard anyone talking about going there for vacation. No big loss; hospitality jobs only end in misanthropy and murder.
If he keeps sending around resumes and keeping an eye out for openings, he can probably get into an entry level position for a vocation he can move up with.

i wish i could tell u !! my husband recently got laid off from his job in berea and had to take a job at the airport for 3 dollars less then he was making at his other job because he couldnt find work anywhere else. we live in parma.
