Why is it very difficult to get a marketing job in ghana? |
I AM A HND MARKETING HOLDER AND HAVE NOT SECURED A JOB SINCE I COMPLETED MY NATIONAL SERVICE IN JULY2006 There are no jobs in Ghana. i dunno Ghana has a very different style of economy to most countries outside of Africa. In the US or Europe for example the economy is driven largely by capitalism and commercialism and businesses need to compete aggresively with one another for a share of the market. This is where the skills of the marketer come in. However, the Ghanaian economy isn't driven in the same way. The majority of the population are engaged in subsistence agriculture and a large proportion of the remainder are self employed traders. The businesses that do exist rarely employ marketing techniques and I guess this is down to a combination of factors... 1) Ghanaians have very little money and what they do have is spent on essentials such as food and clothing. 2) Businesses are not competitive - they are passive as opposed to aggresive when it comes to getting customers. 3) There isn't that much demand for consumer goods such as TV's, computers or new cars. 4) Marketing adds to the cost of goods and services, in an economy where price is all important the companies that do employ marketing could actually price themselves out of the market. For example, given a choice of a TV at a million cedis or one at 1.1 million cedis many would go for the cheaper option even if it were an inferior model. 5) Exposure to the media is limited, most Ghanainas don't read newspapers or magazines, TV is limited to one or two channels and only for part of the day, few have access to PC's. ANy marketing campaign is going to have limited success if it only reaches a few people. 6) The Ghanaian psyche is such that marketing is ineffective. Look at the Government campaigns regarding HIV AIDS and malaria. Despite a prolonged and high profile campaign involving celebrities and the media the message hasn't really got through to the people Also of course, is the problem of finding employment in a country which currently has 20% unemployment. Job openings that require skilled and trained staff are likely to attract a lot of applicants. You're looking for work in a limited area and competing with a lot of other people. It's going to be hard but I'm sure you will eventually find work. Good luck. |
