Moving from Miami, FL to Hawaii (Oahu). What's a good neighborhood that is still affordable? Jobs? Schools? |
I have a 5 year old daughter who is Japanese American with a lot of family on the island. I am white, but I鈥檓 not concerned with the current locals' social acceptance practices. I don't require someone else's acceptance to identify who I am. We love hiking, biking, swimming, exploring in general and look forward to the daily activities available on the Islands. I have a few concerns, however, how is the job market (as I understand the current job market is 2% better than the job market in the connected 48 states)? Where are the good schools (elementary through high school)? Income levels vs. housing cost or location on where to find such information? Are you an attorney? Because you'll need that kind of salary for you and your family to live comfortably in Honolulu. As for good neighborhoods, check out east Honolulu, the windward side of Oahu, and some of the newer subdivisions in west Oahu. If you're thinking private school for your daughter, look into Iolani and Punahou. They're both about $13,000/yr. If you have a lot of family on the island, it shouldn't be too difficult to acclimate to the "island" lifestyle. Good luck! lol, i hope you have money for private schools. the public system really sucks there. Here is the government web-site that might answer your concerns. Generally, it is a diversity here in Oahu. Not too many racial problems and there are a lots of children who parents are inter-race (like my son). Private school such as Punahou (very expensive) are very well known. Job wise, what is your professional? It is reported that the unemployment rate is low, so you might get a chance of getting a job (but that also depend on your requirements). One warning, it is a high cost of living here. Stay near where you work as the traffic is very bad on rush hours. http://pahoehoe.ehawaii.gov/portal/... I'd recommend Kaneohe as a decent neighborhood on the windward side of the island to raise a child. In central Oahu, will be Mililani, and on the south shore will be Hawaii Kai, Moana and Kahala areas. Your little girl will fit right in as they're affluent and diverse neighborhoods. The schools are pretty good. Private schools are of course better. As for jobs, find a state govt job and you'll be set. Housing cost is high like Miami Beach FL. Average condos $200K, $400K and up. Income levels lags behind the cost of living. Hello! Don't worry about the not accepting part, everyone in hawaii accepts each other. In fact, we have our pretty big share of white people here too! :) I think you should stick to placesin honolulu so it's close to everything. You might want to start out with an apartment since housing is very expensive. (around 600,000 for a 3 bedroom house). Kaimuki is a nice place to live in! It's close to Ala Moana Center (the mall). The schools in honolulu are usually the better ones. As you get to the farther places such as waianae, those are the schools with the most violence and drug use. I suggest that you read the Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Star Bulletin, and Honolulu Weekly on a daily basis. Peruse their classified ads. Also check out Craig's List Hawai'i for unique rentals and jobs in Honolulu. While the unemployment rate is low, our wages SUCK and do not keep pace with the ever increasing cost of rent, groceries, gasoline, tuition, utilities, etc. I'm not sure of your financial situation, but since you have a young child, I'd seriously consider living in Manoa Valley and sending your daughter to Noelani Elementary Public School. It is a good school. If you can afford to pay more, I'd encourage you to consider 'Iolani or Punahou. BTW: Our next president, Senator Barack Obama, was a Punahou graduate! Below are a ton of URL's for media and private schools (HAIS=Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools) that I think will help you. Best wishes. |
