Marketing Director? |
I was wondering how stressful it is being a Marketing Director for a big company and if it is more stressful than being a teacher. If you can also give me a little description on what it is like being a Marketing Director and if you like your job. Hi, If you can't handle stress become a teacher! As a MD you are CONSTANTLY MEASURED! Here is an example. "JM, can you please explain why we have two new products, that your team suggested, and what progress has been made in achieving the 10% market share you promised in your initial product proposal. Also explain how your advertising campaign is contributing to reaching that goal". That would be an EASY SESSION and you had better be prepared to ANSWER COMPLETELY or lick your wounds under your desk in a dark office. Your research has to be as much internal as external so that you can ANTICIPATE the QUESTIONS and be PREPARED!!! Here is a true story. I was SMM at a small division of a $500M company in the 70's. We actually made things then, engineering was in the same building and technology was expanding. I was charged with coming up with a new product that would get the division on the map. I have a partial EE, but NEVER owned a plastic pocket protector. I also had a PREMIER engineering group and I could talk their talk. The product was READY and the print media was done. We used an outside agency and the guy looked like Jesus. We had our creative focus groups in his office hot tub with wine and joints. HAH, I would have been FIRED if the company knew, but the ads GOT ATTENTION and the product TOOK OFF like a rocket. We were KICKING our major competitors DONKEY and they were NOT HAPPY. I had engineering resourses that put rockets in the air and they had about 4 guys in nasty sweaters. They also had the financial backing of a HUGE guy so they just bought the division. I was FRIENDS with the MD of our competitor, you could do that then without getting busted by the SEC. He was a QUALITY guy and there wasn't room for two of us; he fired me over drinks and dinner and we remained friends for 20 years. The point of the story is that you can do TOO GOOD of a JOB. If you read people well, can build a LOYAL TEAM, can accept a MEASURABLE challange and can THINK AHEAD of the market, GO FOR IT!!! It really is GREAT FUN and nice compensation as a package. I was also married to a teacher for over 20 years and coached hs soccer for 20 years. The PARENTS are the PROBLEM and you have to be PC 28/7. The accountability is also considerably less along with the compensation. VERY REWARDING THOUGH!!! I was asked SEVERAL times to join the hs as a teacher and they said that they would create a class for me so that I could be the on campus coach. I declined because there are just TOO MANY RULES and STRUCTURE that I felt limited my creative contribution. I am currently the SM at an electronics distributor, retail / industrial and report to the pres. He is 20 years my junior and part of my job is to tell him when he is "FULL of IT". I walk a THIN line but I LOVE the challenge of "spinning" it so it doesn't ANGER him. I hope that this helps and GOOD LUCK, Jacques |
