What's left for Americans to do in the economy? |
India's got the computer jobs. China the manufacturing. Latin American the lower-level service jobs (a lot of money is funnelled out of the US by latin immegrants). Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Space Tourism, Film Making and many other jobs. Gracious, but you don't read much. U.S. unemployment rate is the lowest it's been in forever. Over 243,000 jobs were created in the U.S. just last month alone, stunning economists. Look around. The jobs are everywhere. www.bls.gov Understand your concern. Corporations (all of them multi-national now!) will always seek cheaper destinations to cut costs and lucrative markets to boost revenues. Loyalty is a one-way drive - a good employee is a "stable" employee , not a job hopper. A firm can do what it likes. Hire you if you are coming cheap, fire you if someone in vietnam does the same job at a lower cost. I guess the answer lies in seeking global mobility and higher specialized education (even though it's not cheap). If Indians are getting into Silicon Valley and running start-up firms there, Americans too need to trot the globe seeking opportunities elsewhere. You might want to take a look at enrolment statistics of universities in the US. The number of foreigners getting admitted in these universities is only going north. Indians and Chinese have built a lot of competence in manufacturing, IT outsourcing, and management through their education and work experience in US universities. As far as front end tasks are concerned, it is not going anywhere. The goods and services generated elsewhere will be launched in the US market by American marketers using American salespeople talking to American customers. I love America!! You might want to consider nursing or paramedicine. Both fields need huge numbers of personnel. By some estimates there are 4515 Paramedics in Missouri with a need for 15,000. Nursing shortages are rampant throughout the country. Both good fields you should consider. There is plenty for Americans to do in this economy. Perhaps getting a relevant education might be a good first step. Transportation of manufactured goods, banking and investment counseling, merchandise sales are a few more jobs. What some people don't realize that the large number of employed people (statistically reported) are working in minimum wage positions. Other people who have lost jobs and no longer collect unemployment benefits do not report and many may still be out of work. The statistics are skewed. |
