Has anyone here lived in China for any length of time? Did you find it hard to adjust if you're from the West

I've studied in China twice...and loved it both times. Living conditions are generally fine in a city. I lived in both Beijing and Shanghai, and my living conditions were great. I had great apartments in both places that had a lot of the luxuries from home. The internet is restricted, but Yahoo works just fine...and it is possible to get on cnn.com you just have to try over and over and just wait for it to load. For news in the states while I was gone, I would usually try to check small news stations from the state i lived in in the states...those websites cover all of the top stories, and are rarely blocked in china.

As far as the language goes, you should be fine as long as you learn the basics...like counting, basic conversational skills, etc. You can probably take some classes at a local university while you are there to help you pick up some of the language.

It was not hard for me to adjust to my life in China, but that might be because I have traveled a lot since I was quite young and have been exposed to other cultures from a young age. If you live in one of the major cities, there are enough resources for you to have those comforts from home...even if it's something as simple as certain style western foods. For example, in Beijing, you can go to places like the Luftansa center for a western style grocery store...and WalMart even has some good western foods in their grocery store. In Shanghai, Carrefour is a great place to get foods from the states. There are also tons of western food chains all over china. You will not believe how many KFC's you will find in China...they are everywhere, and is quite popular. The biggest KFC in the world is in Beijing!! Pizza Hut in China is a nice sit down restaraunt and it is quite good. Of course you see McDonald's everywhere. Oh and 17 new Dairy Queens have been opening in Shanghai over the past year! I lived near a Domino's pizza in Beijing! Tony Romas, the Outback, and TGI Fridays are also a common site in the big cities. Subway sandwiches are widely available in Beijing. Starbucks is everywhere, including INSIDE of the Forbidden City! There are so many other small western restaraunts spread out to cater to all of westerners calling China home. I think that you should definitely embrace the culture and eat the food while you're there, but I know and understand that sometimes you just want a piece of home, even if it's just a meal!

I hope all ends up well...and you will have a blast in China...trust me! It's an amazing country with so much to offer. Oh and the shopping is amazing!
My mother just got back from a year of teaching English in a university in China.

She has traveled and worked everywhere from China to Ghana and she says China is the only place she would not go back to.

She is a big believer in being out spoken and the Chinese control greatly what you can say, read, etc. It is changing, but the control is there. There was only 1 computer in the entire university with Internet and that one was tightly controlled on who could use it.
Yes I have lived there and worked.

something I found difficult to adjust with are
*smelly toilet and squat type.
*unfortunately ppl doesn't understand English
*many fake products in the market
*water contaminated and some bottled water is not trustworthy (buy western mineral water)
*There don't have "smile" in the menu of McDonald's in China. *sigh*

On the other hand, what I really liked is
* ppl are kind and pure, except men in city.
* time goes by little slowly
* found authentic Chinese foods are tasty (of cos not all dishes).
* enjoyed foot massage almost every week.

You can bring your laptop PC to China. but the connection speed is very slow.
Yes Internet connection is monitored. and I am hearing you can't use POP mails, like Outlook Express, with foreign address today(domestic address is ok).
Yes...been here many years now.

Not difficult to adjust since I hated my own country, its people, and their hpocritical values.

You will learn to speak mandarin, whether you have lessons or not.

People will speak to you in english all the time.

Living conditions will be as good or as bad as you want them to be, depending on how much money you have to spend. 1200 RMB a month gets a very nice large western flat with all the convieniences (outside of Shangahi and Beijing and Southern China).

I am in China now and Yahoo works a lot better here than Hotmail. So, answers works.

Internet is conienient,,,I have DSL line at my home. Proxy server allows me to surf where I want..even to the Propaganda organ CNN.com.

Don't believe the propaganda about China, and have a nice day.

been there, done that. =]
