Were the "three wise men" that traveled from the east to worship Jesus Christ- from such countries as China ?

Were they oriental in race? Or we they as is said of Job, "from the East"

Nativity scenes usually depict three robed men with their camels, arriving at a stable where the babe Jesus is lying in a manger. The splendidly dressed visitors are commonly called the three wise men. What does the Bible have to say about them?

According to the Bible, the so-called wise men were 鈥渇rom eastern parts,鈥?and it was there that they had learned about Jesus鈥?birth. (Matthew 2:1, 2, 9) It must have taken a long time for these men to travel to Judea. When they eventually found Jesus, he was no longer a newly born babe in a stable. Instead, the men found Mary and 鈥渢he young child鈥?living in a house.鈥擬atthew 2:11.

The Bible calls these men magi, or 鈥渁strologers,鈥?and it does not say how many there were. The Oxford Companion to the Bible explains: 鈥淭he connection between magic and astrology is reflected in the visitors鈥?fascination with the star that had led them to Bethlehem.鈥?The Bible clearly condemns all forms of magic and the Babylonian practice of trying to get information from the stars.鈥擠euteronomy 18:10-12; Isaiah 47:13.

The information conveyed to these men did not lead to any good. It aroused wicked King Herod鈥檚 jealous anger. This, in turn, resulted in the flight of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus to Egypt and the murder of all male children in Bethlehem 鈥渇rom two years of age and under.鈥?Herod had carefully ascertained the time of Jesus鈥?birth from what he learned from the astrologers. (Matthew 2:16) In view of all the troubles caused by their visit, it is reasonable to conclude that the star that they saw and the message about 鈥渢he one born king of the Jews鈥?came from God鈥檚 enemy, Satan the Devil, who wanted to do away with Jesus.鈥擬atthew 2:1, 2.

The star these men followed led them, not directly to Jesus鈥?birthplace in Bethlehem, but to Jerusalem, where King Herod ruled.

Matthew is the only Gospel that refers to these visitors. (2:1-12) But does Matthew mention that there were three and that they were kings, and does he record their names? The Catholic newspaper Kirchenzeitung f眉r das Bistum Aachen admits: 鈥淭he Three Holy Kings are not referred to as such in the Bible. Starting in the sixth century, the wise men were understood to have been . . . three kings. . . . As to the number of astrologers, . . . Matthew gives no details. . . . In the ninth century they first appeared under the names Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.鈥?Furthermore, the Catholic reference work Lexikon f眉r Theologie und Kirche notes that the Greek word ma'goi does not mean kings but, rather, 鈥渙nes having secret knowledge of astrology.鈥?Justin Martyr, Origen, and Tertullian each understood the word to mean 鈥渁strologer.鈥?Modern Bible translations also use 鈥渁strologers鈥?at Matthew 2:1, 7.鈥擳he Living Bible; An American Translation.

The lexicon adds: 鈥淢atthew 2:16 indicates that the visit took place perhaps one year or more after the birth of Jesus.鈥?Indeed, verse 11 speaks of a 鈥渉ouse,鈥?not a stable, where they 鈥渟aw the young child.鈥濃€擪ing James Version.

So no one actually knows how many men came to see Jesus. Source(s): Bible
Reasoning from the Scriptures
why does it matter?
smart one
They were probably from present day Syria, Jordan, Iran or Iraq... back then travel from these areas to Bethlehem would take months so was considered far enough to be given the general descriptor, East.
Yes. The three wise men were Chinese. One of them was Confucius and no one is wiser than him. The other two were more streetwise than book smart.
