I need to know something about a degree from China.?

Im American and I really want to go co college in China. I have done extensive research and talked to a few schools. One thing that I dont know and this is why I am so hesitant is this. I would love to live in China, but I dont know if I would ever want to leave and I NEED to know that if I get a degree in China that it will be valid in the United States or for that matter the United Kingdom. Do you know? Also I heard I can get a job in China, and live well, which is a good benifet. That came direct from an efriend in China, but I read on here that a top contributor said I will need to be fluent in Chinese.I dont know. Anything you have to say would be great. Thanks!

To go to university in China you need to pass a certain level of the HSK (Hanyu Shuipin Kaoshi) - you pretty much need to be fluent (just like any Chinese student). HSK's are done usually only once a year in most big North American cities, so make sure you register early. Oh, yes, only some schools in China are authorised to have foreign students in the undergraduate programs.... so make sure they are authorised or you may spend 4 years there (and tens of thousands of dollars) but not get a diploma (don't laugh... it's happened).

You can join a prep year (or two) to learn Chinese if you want before undertaking your Bachelors Degree, and some people do learn enough Chinese to make it through their undergrad. Most Chinese universities have a "Chinese" department full of foreign students. It is a non-degree program.

Now for the bad news... a Chinese undergrad degree is almost useless if you want to go for a Masters in any other country (other than China). A Chinese degree is not fully recognized by any university outside of China. It isn't even recognized by many North American employers.

If you want to go to school in China then my advice is to do the prep year there and try to learn Mandarin... or look into American universities that have international exchange programs (you go to school in the States for two years, then in China for one or two years). This way you get the degree from the American school, and the recognition from the Chinese school.

If you want to just experience life in China then get your degree in the states and then teach in China (or do business). You have to have a bachelors degree in order to get the right working papers.

Good luck.

What you might want to do is get a degree in the United States and then go teach English in China. You could get a degree in TESL(Teaching English as a Second Language)

You do not need to be very good in Chinese. Actually, many foreigners who lived in China for years still know little about chinese 'cos nowadays a lot of people in China especially in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai can speak a little English. Several basic Chinese words would be enough for your daily life. Besides, if you are here for study, surely you will aquire Chinese very soon. Don't worry about language problem.I guess the most important thing depends on which place you've chosen to go, And you'd better have a good knowledge of it and then you can make a good preparation.

Anyway good luck :)
