I want a job as an entry level consultant in China. What is available?

I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and am a white American. What is out there for me?

I doubt you can find work here on Y Answers.

By the way what has your colour got to do with the job you are seeking?

No offense but if you want to be a consultant you should be able to find that answer yourself. How embarassing for a future consultant to ask for this simple kind of advice himself. Try the American Chamber of Commerce website for starters.

Try your luck on http://www.asiaxpat.com (Click the Chinese cities on the list). This is probably the best source I've found for upper-level jobs in China. If your Chinese abilities include reading (which they will need to do for a really good job) then try the major Chinese professional job sites: http://www.51job.com or http://www.zhaopin.com

Getting a professional level job in China is still possible, but it's tough and getting tougher. Unless you have advanced technical knowledge and/or extensive management or engineering experience, be prepared for a long search. In this case you might consider coming here in another capacity- it's usually fairly easy to get English-teaching jobs. This will give you a physical presence in China and a better ability to search out the work you really want.

If you are fluent in Chinese and have consultancy chops, you should also consider seeking work from within the USA. Many companies with JV operations in China need talented people to send here; many more need people with the language and business skills. You'll make a LOT more money and likely receive better treatment than you'll get from many Chinese companies.

In China, your race/color often DOES make a big difference in your job prospects. Sad but true.
