The first surgery on the breasts was in 1895, performed by Dr. Vincenz Czerny.

The first augmentation (enlargement) was probably around 1900, but no one knows for sure (there were reports and rumors, but the patients were kept secret)

They weren't really popular though until Japanese prostitutes started getting them to attract American GI's in the 1940s. Shortly after they became widespread in the English speaking world.
