Protecting America.... threats from abroad.. rethinking American foreign policy.? |
Does anyone else believe American borders are far too open? With the tragedy at Virginia Tech and other headlines in the news I'm noticing a common theme. Foreign threats. I'm not talking about Al Quada either. I'm talking about America's immigration and foreign trading policy. If Cho Seung-Hui's family wasn't allowed infiltrate our country in the first place, this tragedy could've been averted. If we didn't import our wheat gluten from China, our nation's pets wouldn't be sick and dying. If we didn't offshore our tech jobs to India there wouldn't be so many unemployed white collared Americans, and the same goes for blue collared workers and Mexicans. If we didn't buy Hondas and Toyotas like they were going out of style, our nation's rust belt families would be living a more prosperous life. Bottom line is: The threats come from afar but it is our responsiblity to protect ourselves and unless we see a major foreign policy shift soon our country will only grow more vulnerable. I know we've tried to be nice but I'm not sure that whole "Ellis Island" mentallity is working out as well as it did so many years ago.First and foremost it is America's responsibility to do what is good for Americans.I'm not racist, my bf's from mexico...Legally! And even he feels the same. I'm not hating but guys in his company that aren't even legal and who do not have their families in the US are claiming 5 or 6 dependants to get more money out of their paychecks (they take out less taxes.) they send all their money to mexico, live better than we do, and cry because they are not receiving benefits and medicare that they are not even entitled to. We have political discussions at our cookouts and we don't have problems telling each other what we think. Then we drink a beer and chill. What can I say? As far as trade goes. I think it's important to keep it alive. Yes. You're exactly right. We should just cut off all borders, eliminate foreign trade and hide in our homes. That way we have no influx of foreign currency, the value of the dollar drops and inflation goes crazy. Sounds like paradise. Cho lived in the US for the majority of his life and his parents arrived here legally. Stop hating. EDIT: All I'm saying is that Cho was a legal immigrant. Does that mean that all legal immigrants are mass-murderers? No. So any sweeping policy change would be based on an aberration, rather than the norm. And when you start to exclude the majority based on a severe minority, an outlier, then you're just asking for trouble. This could have been carried out by ANYONE....not just immigrants. All it takes is one crazy person with the means having that final "snap". yes if we closed the border maybe the columbine killers couldnt have come right.... please one of the things that makes this country great is the amount of LEGAL immigration. wherea as for illigial immigration from south of the border i dont support them and i think they are a threat and shouldnt be allowed in this country. it makes me sick to my stomach when they are protesting and want to be citizens. they broke our rules. from a LEGAL immigrant from bulgaria Go ahead and close the borders of the USA, become xenophobic and isolationist. What will happen? The USA would fall behind the rest of the world technologically, would run out of oil, wouldn't enjoy international investment which helps drive a large part of the economy, and there would be a similar aging population problem like many countries in the world. No immigrants? See the USA's population drop. Cho Seung-Hui's family didn't infiltrate the USA. This was one incident, and most immigrants are hard working people who are just trying to make a living. Don't want anything foreign in the USA? Say good-bye to DVDs, television, insulin for diabetics, many many jobs, and much more. No foreign trade, no one buying American dollars, the USA will be very poor quickly. By the way, immigrants aren't the ones who are killing and murdering most of the time, it's quite often American born people. The USA does need to change its foreign policy, though. Stop interfering in other countries, take care of their own problems. Stop telling other countries how to govern themselves. Govern yourself first. It's fine to give help to other countries, but don't tell them how to run their own countries. What happened at VT was not a foreign-made problem, it was a homegrown problem. Cho is basically a product of American society, as he had lived much of his life in the USA. Yes, sometimes United States has to think about its border policy. But we can't forget long history that US has been prosperous by many races. It is difficult to delineate people eligible to be in US. Please remember, the incident is deeply related to mental ill.
