Teaching ESL abroad and in the U.S?

I am a U.S citizen and will have my B.A in English and Communications by 2009. After school I would like to teach in Thailand for a year or two. I would eventually like to teach in NYC. What do I need? Do I need a general teaching certificate and a TESOL certificate? I really have no idea. I have not taken any Education courses. I hear it is not too hard to get a job in Thailand. I am just worried about what I need when I comeback.

I'm not to sure about teaching outside of the county. I know my Aunt taught English in Hong Kong for 10 years and loved it. My friend is in China and she has a B.A in education.

In New York to be able to teach you need a B.A in eduction and to meet New York State standers, they make you meet certain requirements(classes you need to take) . You also need NYS certification pending on what you want to specialize in the amount of test vary, most are 4 -5 certification exams. Then you have a few years to get your masters.

The credentials/certifications/qualification... you will need depend upon what type of ESL you want to teach, the students you want to teach, and where you want to teach.

Do you want to teach kids, adults, immigrants, professional business people?

Do you want to teach K-12, at a community college, university, private students, private language school, non-profit organization?

For more of the things you need to consider, you can see the two links listed as resources.

If you already are certain about who, what and where you want to teach, I would contact the place directly and ask them what their requirements are.

Have a great time abroad. Good luck.
