What kind of jobs can i get with a major in us. history, or just plain history?

The obvious one is a professor at a university some where.

You could also work at museums, in journalism, in business. In addition history is a good lead in into law as well. I know if you focus on some "trouble spot"-- like Korea or the Middle East or somewhere like that, the CIA will hire you also as a analyst (think Jack Ryan in the Tom Clancy movies/books-- without the action). There are probably others as well!!

Cheers!!

The first answer has some very good practical information. But keep in mind that to teach you would have to go on to get your Master's. I would add the following comments: I am 46 years old and will complete my BA in American history in June, 2008. When I graduated from high school nearly 30 years ago, history was what I loved, but everyone from high school guidance counselors to college admissions people discouraged me from going for this degree. They said busines was where the money was and I should go after the money. So I went to college as a busines admin major and dropped out after two semesters. I was discouraged. Business was not my thing. I couldn't make heads or tails of accounting. So I got married a couple of years later, had two kids, blah, blah, blah. As an adult I have struggled to balance, work, child care, home, etc, with attending college. My point is, go with what you love. If you love history, go to college and get your degree in history. You WILL find a good job, especially with the advice of your college history professors. Will you become a millionaire? Probably not.

A famous comedian who lived to be 100+ died just a few years ago. His name was George Burns. At his 100th birthday party, a famous newsperson asked Mr. Burns what his secret to a long life was. He replied, "Fall in love with your work."

I earned a BA in history and political science in 2005. I am a high school history teacher (for this, I had to go back to school to get state certification). Other jobs include museums, archives, historical societies, national parks, historic sites libraries, and other of these types of institutions. However, be advised that competition in these institutions is very tense because of the limited number of positions. Study history, it is a rewarding subject, and, in my opinion, improves the mind. Consider a major in history with a minor in something else, like journalism, or education, to give yourself more opportunities.

Teaching, working for historical foundations, the usual suspects. You can also go out and get a job that just requires a four year degree of any kind. As far as teaching goes, in high school the market is usually small, so you would not do wrong to go ahead and switch majors to Social Studies, which will be far more advantageous to you if it's not already too late. As far as history goes, the US history major is a bit of a flooded market.
