Most feasible way into the US for someone without a degree...?

I'm from the UK, and my A Level results were good enough to get on most university courses in my areas of interest. Obviously, as the US has one of the world's most restrictive immigration policies, what's the most feasible option to migrate to the US? It appears, if you haven't got a degree in a specialist area or can do a job another US citizen isn't qualified or available to do, your chances are pretty slim. But, if you do a degree in the US, under a student visa, does this increase your chance of getting a work visa after you leave? Or would you just finish your degree course, then it would be, you're got your degree, now bugger off?

Thanks for any advice.

You should have no trouble getting a student visa if you intend on going to university here. If you CAN study here, do. It will open up potential employers. If you find an employer, they can sponsor you for a visa. I know that Worldcom hires many Britains. I've seen quite a few who don't hold degrees but are ex-military. If you have a degree in technology -- you will be easily placed. Check out all the big companies in your field. They have attorneys on staff to help with the paperwork.

I have to laugh every time you brits say we have the most restrictive immigration policy when we take in more immigrants than all of the rest of the countries in the world combined! We have too many unemployed Americans to provide jobs for the rest of the world.

One of the stipulations in obtaining a student visa is that the individual will NOT seek employment or be gainfully employed (except in very special circumstances, like tutoring while at a post-secondary instituion).

The individual must return to his home country and remain there for some period of time (typically a minimum of 2 years) after obtaining his/her degree before being allowed to return to the US on a work visa. This is true even if the work visa is sponsored by a US-based corporation.

Your chances of getting a work visa are slightly improved (the company would not have to prove that your academic accreditation is the equivalent of a US one, since it would BE a US one!), but that is the only benefit it would net you.
