What would be a realistic amount to ask for? I don't want to go too high as they won't even consider me but if I go too low then the same reasoning applies. I'm on about 拢12000/$22000 at the moment but I'm working in a bank. Would $25000 be appropriate? The job is in LA. Thank you

Check out www.salary.com. It will help. Just put your asking salary a bit lower than what the website says is the norm -- the website inflates a bit (just because the ranges are so generic).
