Where can I find a house (or a room) for a temporary work in UK?

I'd like to know if there's any society or agency who can help me to find a house or a room at distance for a short period, so to allow me to get a temporary job in UK.
I'm not searching for an Estate Agency, but something different, don't know if you can undesrtand me.....
