Returning to the UK with my US wife.?

I understand that we need to apply for a visa for my wife. We are settled here in Texas so have no address or jobs in the UK. Regarding our means, I am assuming that we need a cash amount or range in order to be considered to return, also are we expected to have jobs waiting and an address (not staying with family) prior to our arrival. This seems a little difficult to achieve as they seem to be expecting an average person to have extensive means just to live in their own country with their foreign wife. Do I have this correct?

Best answer I can give is speak to your nearest UK embassy and see what advice they can offer - I'm sure it's nowhere near that difficult!

After all - how many other immigrants make it into this country? - quite a few of those manage to stay even after imigration have said no!

Whoa there, ..... you need to speak with the Embassy first to get the information you want. Jeez, you're asking some serious stuff here and asking here just doesn't seem right. What you want to do is serious and for correct information you should check the correct place. Phone the Embassy.

Good luck with your move to England. I hope you find the country to your liking. when last were you here living?? It's changed you know. This ain't the land of "An englishmans home is his castle" anymore. Too many changes here now... don't burn any of your bridges. You may want to return to Texas.

If you have been married and living together more than four years, and assuming you have been a UK citizen for at least that long, your wife can apply for settlement here: " If you and your husband, wife or civil partner have been living together outside the UK for four years or more, and they have been a British citizen for four years or more, there will be no time limit on how long you can stay in the UK" "you" here means the non-British partner.

"In some cases, we can grant settlement entry clearance. This gives your husband, wife or civil partner, permission to settle in the UK permanently as soon as he or she arrives. To get settlement entry clearance, you must:

have married or formed a civil partnership four years ago
have spent that four years living together outside the United Kingdom; and
now be returning to the UK to settle here together"

Unfortunately the websites are not very clear about whether or not the normal requirements for support and accommodation still apply. Obviously, you would be best to check with the British embassy, which is where you would need to apply for "settlement entry clearance", or get someone in UK to get more information from a UK solicitor or other OISC registered advisor.
