yes you need a P46 for the tax office to sort out your tax code.. you use a P46 if you cant supply a P46 it help with end of year P60 calcuations..

have a look on the inland revenue website they may have some information helpful to you.

A p46 is when you have no P45 from a previous employer - do the newest employer know you have 2 jobs?

yes...?
New employer can't use a p45 to determine your old tax code as you don't have one (a p45 or an 'old tax code') as you are still on it as you are still in / keeping your other job (which I presume you started before the other one??) Presumably, your other employer just needs you to fill in the P46- then they will send to inland revenue who will know your records anyway and they'll issue the second employer with your other tax code- which will be different to the tax code in your other job.
Confusing I know but don't fret- inland revenue will sort it out- might take a month or 2 tho

You should fill in a P46 for your main job, i.e. the one that generates the most income. For that job you will receive a tax code and a tax allowance. The other job will be taxed at basic rate with no allowances. If you have a P45 from a previous employment you should give your main employer that instead of a P46. Perhaps your new employer doesn't know that you've got another job. If you don't want him to know then tear the form up.

yes this is correct. the P46 form is used when you dont have a P45 from a previous job, The P46 also allows you to notify the Inland Revenue whether the new job is you only employment.

as it is not, you can provide the details of your 1st job on this form.

basically, this means that your tax code will be applied to the job that pays the most, then the other job will be taxed at a flat rate of 22%.

so you will be taxed less on one job, and taxed more on the other.

so for your main that job that pays the most, you should ahve a tax code of 522L and the second job will have a code of BR (22%)

this is so that over the course of the year, you will be taxed the correct amount over both jobs.
