What does "an academic result of 2.1" or above mean in UK?

I was applying for a job in UK and it was written in their website that they seek candidates who have an academic result of 2.1 or above. I tried google seraching but didnt find anything. Please help me if you know about it.

British system undergraduate degrees are awarded as follows, from best to worst:

* First-Class Honours (First or 1st)
* Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)
* Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)
* Third-Class Honours (Third or 3rd)
* Ordinary degree (Pass)
* Fail (no degree is awarded)

Are you in the US right now? A rough equivalent to a British 2:1 for someone who attended university in the US would be for you to have gone to a reputable, appropriately accredited university, and come out with about a 3.3 GPA. A 3.0 may also be acceptable.

a 2:1 is also called an upper second class honours and it is the second highest grade that you can get in the UK and Ireland. Generally along the "b" line!
The top grade is called a first! and theres also a 2:2 and a third
