UK bans non-EU unskilled workers?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7...

Unskilled workers from non-EU countries will be banned from taking jobs in the UK for the "foreseeable future", the government has announced.
Spouses who apply for entry to the UK may also have to sit English language assessments under new proposals.
The moves come as ministers unveil details of their new points-based system for migrants.
About 12,000 unskilled migrants from non-EU countries in Africa, America and Asia came to work in the UK last year.

your take please

Grim Reaper - i go to college part time, one day a week, on fridays studying advanced diploma in mechanical engineering, i work part time on week ends, and my spelling is good

Its a start. Should have happened about a decade ago but better late than never. Although i don't think this is going to make a huge difference to the numbers coming into the country because about 90% of immigrants come from eastern europe and this isn't going to stop any of the spongers from those countries.

To grim reaper: what are you talking about? theres nothing wrong with his spelling, maybe try answering the question rather than criticising everyone.

A little late in the day, but 1 out of 10 for effort for Labour today.

*edit.. when they actually act upon these suggestions and they are passed as legislation through parliament, then I shall up their overall score to 2.5 out of 10

Good.

But its too little too late for labour.

No offence intended Kamran, you are 19 years old.

a) Why aren't you in higher education?
b) If you aren't in higher education why aren't you in work?
c) Why is your spelling not very good?

Don't waste your life away on here.

Good!!

a fine time to shut the stable door, all the horses have bolted

About time too. This year alone Birmingham city council have spent over one million pounds on interpreters.

How are you going to get your family in now?

Don't listen to GUY U.He's a nob.

The phrase shuttin the barn door after the horse has bolted springs to mind, but at least they've started to wake up.

Whos going to fill the vacancies in the mugger and rapist sector now ?

Well thats just typical, they should have thought about this 5 years ago, bit late now closing the stable door after the horse bolts.

Stable door and horse springs to mind mate.

To little to late i think.

Too little too late. Other countries have been doing this for years.

Grim Reaper. When you know something about Kam, then voice an opinion

Edit: ernie e is right. Gateshead council have done the same.

I agree. However, I would say all unskilled workers from anywhere.
Oh, and you might want to check your punctuation.

What do they consider an unskilled worker?

Judging by the current slump in education standards i think most of them have a head start on us already.

not really interested in the he said she said but i will bet my testicles that the number they gave is 1/3 or even 1/4 of the true numbers they have no idea how many people have come in illegally

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in the UK. I am in the US and we rely heavily on unskilled labor to keep our economy functioning. Without them, the US economy would tank. But then again, we don't have as many social programs as the UK so it doesn't cost us much to have their labor here. We benefit a lot from migrant labor.

If your statistics are true- then 12,000 is hardly an amazing number- I'm sure we could have quite happily accommodated them. Many will be from countries that were probably colonised by British Imperialists. I'm fed up with this anti asian, anti black stance of the government which is so pro eu. I was always proud of the way we helped refugees and people from developing countries- now all we do is let more and more europeans in.

Are you sure you really wanna be here though Kamran?
Do you want to bring your family up in a western culture?

Regarding the question.... it`s a step forward.

There is a major major problem with kids who have left school without qualifications and have learning difficulties.
The jobs that are normally open to them are being taken by people whom are taken on via 'agencies'.
The problem will be when a lot of these kids reach 18 the govt is going to have to start handing out benefit.
These kids want to work but find it so very very FRUSTRATING that no one will take them on just so they can earn a little money for themselves.

I think you may find that its the immigrants from the EU countries who are ausing the most problems.

Your so right

Not before time, though the damage has already been done.

Not enough, Most unskilled migrants are coming from the EU.
Should stop the lot now. Suppose I'll get called a racist again for that.lol
Kamran,, Is that diploma a new thing. in my day Engineers studied City & Guilds or went on the Higher National course (HNC) although I believe they now have an HND.

Thanks for that. I wish you the best of luck.

Doctors and other health professionals who aren't at least fairly fluent in English should be banned too. Where ever they come from. As someone with a post graduate degree I'm very happy to take on the responsibility of assessing them.

Hello again Kamran, when you join the ranks of the tax payers you will take this sort of thing as seriously as the rest of us do. Do you know how absolutely gutting it is to see how much tax is taken from you every year and realise that a lot of it is going to prop up stupid causes, despotic governments and pay the over-inflated wages of the great and good at Westminster who let you down time and time again. This shambolic crew currently helping to sink the country will be out of office after the next election but that wont bother them - they'll be on the EEC gravy train. We do not want nor do we need any more workers coming into this country who are unskilled. They dont speak the language, demand housing as a right, bring disease with them and generally have cost us billions between education, housing, the NHS and welfare handouts! Let them go to France or Germany or Italy - perhaps even a few could volunteer as police men in Portugal. No one who wants to come and work here or live here should come as a burden on the state and should be able to read, write and speak english well. If they think it is worth achieving a life here then they should work hard to attain it. This is one of the biggest problems that people have with immigrants and causes no end of upset.

One day a week at college ???
Is it really worth the bother ??
Mechanical engineering eh ? That should come in handy when you need to assemble wee timers etc into your future projects !!

I'm very happy for skilled workers to come here to address the brain drain from the UK. A points system would seem to be a good way to slow the flow but keep the influx of desirable migrants.

Just stopping the non EU unskilled workers will not cure the problem. All would have to be stopped to make any improvement.
Mind you stopping the non EU imigrants should cut down on the cases of fraud.
To reduce other crimes the eastern block imigrants would need to be banned.
All these imported criminals cost the tax payer a small fortune to keep them in the lap of luxury in prison.
So deport all convicted foriegners as undesirable alliens instead of sending them to prison..!!

Thats all very well, not sure if they are allowed to claim DSS

hope that includes you.
