Family tree, I need some help as it is very confusing, I have been searching for months so help would be great |
O.K, where to start. On my father's side (the one I am trying to research) his mother came from the Greek Island of Heos, I do not care too much on that, it's when you get to my Grandfather that it becomes particulary difficult. His family come (recently) from Alexandria, Egypt, but I know that originally he came from Northern Italy. His father (great-granddad) fought and died in World War One. His mother was apparently...loose... and by the end of the war she was married to a different man called Showak Mistri (Italian name, not Indian Mistry) but, because of fear of having a bastard child she put the fathers name as Showak. Now, although I am not 100% sure, Showak was not his real father (close family friends say that he was not) but in all the records they say he is. I cannot ask him myself as he is very ill in France/Switzerland, all the main records are in Alexandria, Egypt and Addis Abbaba, Ethiopia (where he lived most of his life due to job commitments) and Athens, Greece. I'm afraid that you're avoiding the only person who can put the issue to rest. If you love him, call him and tell him that you're thinking of him. Tell him that you're working on the family tree and would love to have him tell you about his family so that you have it saved for posterity. I know very few people who won't open up with a general invitation. As the conversation develops you can work in a subtle question like "I heard a rumor about your dad...what did your mom tell you about him...?" It's not specific and not really gossipy, but it opens the door to see if he'll open up to you. The only other way to handle it is to have someone else ask him. But I'm not sure they sound open to it. There won't be any records anywhere that will be able to help you because, as you already said, your great-grandmother went to lengths to cover up the illegitimacy. He's the keeper of the truth. Either he shares it while he's able or it dies with him. Good luck. *****In answer to your additional question, the fact that there is a cluster of one name in a given area doesn't mean that it came from that area. Because Mistri is a name that comes from someone's occupation it could be adopted by anyone of that occupation way back when who spoke that language. That's why Smith appears in some version in every language in Europe. You really need to talk to grandfather. You might also try finding his baptismal records. That would give you a significant start. From there you'll have the parish information on the mother and "father" and can trace their marriage and baptismal records. |
