Why is there a short-term skills shortage of florists in New Zealand? |
Is it bad pay (why Kiwis don't want to work as hairdressers) or early starts (why Kiwis don't want to work as bakers) but why is there a lack of florists? I'd like to get into NZ via an office job and then possibly retrain as one while I'm out there - but am wondering why it's not popular.... perhaps there's a good reason I don't want to be one!! Hi One of the single biggest issues facing New Zealand at the moment is the lack of people!! Particularly, people with needed skills. We are underpopulated (a country the size of the United Kingdom with only 4 million people in it) and so there are skill shortages in almost every area or profession. As to your specific question regarding florists, like you, I don't know of any particular reason why someone who wanted to make a career as a florist would not choose to do so. Having said that, early starts may be a problem for some - if you are a buyer for your business and want to get the best flowers you'll need to be at the flower markets at around 6 to 6.30am!! I suspect that there is no sustained shortage of florists - if there were then the occupation would be listed in the 'Long Term Skill Shortage List'. Florists appear in the 'Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL)'. This list is used only when assessing applications for work permits/visas (i.e. generally for people who want to come here to work temporarily and then return home). The list is not used for those seeking to come to New Zealand permanently. Being on the ISSL, indicates a temporary shortage which can be plugged by temporary workers. If the skill shortage is thought to be prolonged then it will be listed as a 'Long Term Shortage'. It is this Long Term Shortage list that is used when assessing permanent migrants. Sometimes a few things can influence the populaterity of a job, say, a popular character in a tv show/movie might be a vet so everyone wants to be a vet, ect. |
