Hamilton VS Burlington - Ontario, pros and cons of each city please? Looking at moving from New Zealand.? |
Job is in Burlington, but my reserch says cost of living there is more expensive and Hamilton is a better option, what do you locals think? OK... I'm from Hamilton (but I live in Toronto now) so I understand what some of those people in Burlington are saying and yes some of it applies. But a lot of what those people are saying are pretty dated opinions about the city, in fact the number one employer for about the last 20 years has been McMaster University/Medical Centre not the steel mills. But Hamilton really has two sort of personalities. Above the escarpment (commonly known as "the mountain" even though it's really on a few hundred feet) is a nice area. The west end of the city near McMaster University is also nice. The North and East ends of Hamilton are the more industrial areas and maybe a little more gritty. As for crime, in 30 years of living in Hamilton, I've never been a victim of crime. Also, if you decide on Hamilton - check out these folks: www.hamiltonrugby.com I assume that being from N.Z. you're at the very least a Rugby fan if not a player/former player. It's a very social Rugby club and a good way to make friends in a new city. Welcome to Canada & good luck with your move. Lastly, a lot of people who don't live in Hamilton have very negative opinions of it because they only see it from the highway. The main highway from Niagara to Toronto looks right into the industrial heart of Hamilton and for many, that's all they know about it. Hi. Congratulations on moving to Canada, Canada is a great country, you will love it. Hamilton in an industrial port city (known for its steel industry). It is sort of run down in areas, one of the more economically depressed cities in the GTA (greater toronto area), and is not well known for being either a clean city (due to lots of heavy industry) or a 'nice' city. Burlington (where I live btw) is an upscale bedroom community of Toronto. It is much nicer than Hamilton, cleaner, MUCH safer (not that Hamilton is unsafe by international standards) than Hamilton. Burlington is closer to Toronto, so is closer to events and entertainment in Toronto. Burlington will cost more to live in than will Hamilton, but if you can afford it, and care if you live in a nice area or not, you will want to live in Burlington. Hamilton has a 'blue collar' mentality to it. The people are just that - 'blue collar' (nothing against that). Burlington is more well-to-do, and that is reflected in the people, the local issues (social, government, etc.). In the end, it depends on what type of city you want to live in, and what your budget is. Like I said, I would recommend burlington, but it is just more my sort of town. Also, another city you could consider is Waterdown. It is is NorthWest of Burlington, but is very close to both. (less than 10 minute drive to each). Cost of living in Waterdown would be slightly less than burlington, but more than Hamilton. Good luck! I believe Burlington is nicer, however, it can be more expensive. If you are working in Hamilton then maybe you could try some of the smaller towns on the other side of Hamilton instead of Burlington. I agree with the other 2 answers. Burlington is a nicer city to live in. Housing will be more expensive in Burlington. Hamilton has a bad reputation for its crime. There are good and bad areas of Hamilton. Hamilton has a university, if that matters to you. It, also, depends on whether you are coming single or with a family. Burlington is definitely a nicer city to raise a family. You may want to try Dundas or Waterdown, which are smaller towns close to Burlington. Good Luck!!! Lots of people really run down Hamilton. Despite that the downtown core is quite nice. There is a nice Hess village that has lots of traditional English pubs and an art gallery. The closer you get to Dofasco steel the more dismal it becomes Burlington is just a mass of suburbia. boring Downtown Hamilton is your best choice |
