American in Northern Ireland: Psychiatrist for Major Depression? |
I have recently relocated to the UK for job purposes. Over the past few months, I have begun to develop symptoms of major clinical depression. Although I have been trying to avoid it, it has become such an impediment to my daily functioning that I believe I now need psychiatric intervention. However, the medical system is so different here that I do not know where to start. And being depressed, I'm so emotionally and mentally 'tired' that I hardly have the energy to type this. The GPs that I have seen are more aloof than I'm accustomed to in the US. They are happy to write prescriptions for SSRIs like Lexapro, but my understanding is that I'd be put on a very long waiting list to see a specialist psychiatrist, up to 6 months. Does anybody out there have any experience with this? Sorry about your problem but I can relate. I can tell you what has made a HUGE difference in my life and can give you some hope. Go to Amazon.com and order a book called "Mood Cure". It gives you a simple questionaire and recommends how to solve these problems. It explains everything. This is where I learned about 5-HTP. Please check into it. It's not for everyone but can help many. They carry it at most health stores. Please just get the book please. I am not selling the book, it is just what helped me. Good luck. get busy while you wait for the shrink. stray busy -- jog and such or maybe join a gym (never been there?). use your body to change your brain chemistry. some say buy or order one of those special lights. get busy and work those muscles like crazy to fight the depression. it may not simply be depression. you might be bipolar or something else. but for the immediate situation i have answered as best i can. i too am depressed right now but heart surgery and diabetes threw a monkey wrench in my own "tried-and-true" remedy. get busy with a heavy dose of daily exercise. run, stack rocks, climb trees or wrestle sheep whatever. time. |
