Should there be National Service in UK and Ireland?

I think so, because Parents nowadays do such a bad job at bringing up parents. The Chav culture didn't appear overnight, it was a gradual process of poverty and malaise.

If there was National Service between the ages of 16 and 18 then kids can work their way out of poverty.

The main problem is that the military don't want all the rejects, so any form of National Service would have to be completely different from the armed services, and only after sufficient improvement in behaviour is noticed could any of the asbo-type merchants be considered for the real services ! ! !

I'm inclined to agree with you on this one. It certainly wouldn't do any harm.
I reckon kids with ASBO's should be sent striaght into national service. And all the Chav's and there parents!
You give the military too much credit. No point passing the problem onto them. They won't cure it. If there's a problem with children it's the parents responsibility.
can you imagine some of those louts with guns in their hands????

It sounds very good in theory. But what about the Moslems in our midst, who feel that their chief loyalty is to Islam? While it would not be possible to exempt them, there would be all manner of problems in recruiting them to serve in the UK forces, given this attitude. Can you really have servicemen whose conscience does not allow them to swear an oath of fealty to the Crown? And what about their women? They would have to serve too and many of them would find all kinds of cultural reasons for arguing that they should be excused. Look at the trouble which this issue of the veil has already caused!
