I want to leave my job! Help!?

I want to leave my job and move to Ireland with my fiance for a fresh start. I have not been 100% happy at work for a while. But I have been doing a study contract with my employer and have signed a contract sayng that I may have to pay back all or a proportion of the money. Becuase of this I feel trapped, unhappy and scared. I am tempted to just run away, just pack up and go. Can anyone offer any help or advice for this situation?

You shouldn't have let your employer pay for your study if you weren't fully committed to the job and/or the company. I would advise that you stick it out - how long do you have to work there before you pay it back - is it a year? I would just put up with it. If you do a runner, you'll probably get away with it, but then you'll never get a reference from that company.

I've seen other people post on here that their employer has not tried to recover study costs when people have quit, so if you know of the happening in your organisation, then you should be okay, even if you have to do a bit of arguing. But please note that I do not personally know of any situations where this has happened.

They probably won't chase you to Ireland. However, it's possible that they could get a court order to garnish your wages at a future job should you return to the US. Might affect your credit rating if it was considered a loan. I'd pay it back, or arrange a payment plan, before you left the country.
