Would you consider the job of a University Lecturer with a Ph.D. a very prestigious occupation?

Are University Lecturers (College Professors in American speak) who hold Ph.D.'s, and thus called "Doctor," a distinguished and prestigious group. If so then why are they paid so little in the UK and Ireland?

It is prestigious academically. Many lecturers also write books in their field of specialization. The pay isn't the best because today's world just doesn't seem to care as much about knowledge as other areas (like sports).
Well, I guess that depends entirely on what you are a Doctor of
Lecturers aren't tenured. That's where the big bucks are.

The more published research you have is reflected in your position. Works the same here in Canada.
I already bore people... I don't need any help.
No......I have some professors who are quacks (Ph.d's)
hopefully when i get my doctorate i will be rich :)
I think they are a prestigious group of people. It takes A LOT of work to get a PhD!
