Does the American government have a forum for open debate (for the opposition to raise their questions)?

I am from Ireland and here we have a forum whereby opposition parties can question and basically heckle and jeer (if the situation merits such action) our president & his colleagues...the opposition party's role is to question the current government on their policies and decision - for their own benefit when next general elections are coming up (as they're casting a shadow of doubt on the governments' capabilities to do their jobs properly) but also to represent an alternative viewpoint....I'm just wondering if and where that forum exists in relation to the American government on a day-to-day basis. It's just that I've never seen a situation like this depicted in relation to the govt. in the States. The UK for examples has the same set-up in Ireland whereby heckling and jeering are commonplace and everyone is answerable to whomever asks a question for the mostpart.....

Barry C, According to Reporters without borders, Ireland has a more free press than America's. We also have free and fair elections which allows for more than one of two parties to be elected.

And you do have an opposition party, but in your system its called the minority, where you say minority leader we say opposition leader.

Im not sure about government institutions. But Fox News is certainly the beacon of democracy in the US outside of the institutional sphere...

No we don't have such an institution at all.

Instead we have free press and regularly scheduled elections, without the concept of an "opposition party".

We realy are'nt set up that way. The two parties in congress can debate the merrits of a given piece of legislation, but don't have a forum within congres to question presidential policy. Unfortunately that really has to happen in the press.
