Should we have allowed the immigrant workers?

Every Eastern European I know who has come to Northern Ireland to work saves up all their money and sends it back home. None of it goes back into our economy. They dont visit our tourist attractions or spend money in our shops other than what they need to survive. My wife cant even get a cleaning job or work in a factory as all these menial jobs go to the foreigners. I dont think they should be allowed unless unemployment is at 0%.

You will find that this scenario that you mention happens all the time all over the world. it happened in the UK with the influx of Asians in the 50's and 60's and to this day, it's been happening in the USA for decades. Like you say most of the cash goes back to their home countries where the cash is worth much more and can buy more, it is their way of securing a reasonable existence for their families who otherwise would be in despair.

In America where I have spent 8 years, in the south, Mexican immigrants both legal and illegal do all the chore work, you will never see an American picking fruit off the trees in the vinyards, sweeping and cleaning jobs, landscaping work gardening work, trash removal, hotel cleaning work.

Americans will never do this type of work, they train a little and get a better job as they are natives and speak the local language (English) so they get better jobs easily. I would expect this to happen in Ireland too.

All the western countries are moving over to high tech type work and the Manufacturing jobs are going to poor countries such as China India and soon Africa too where labour is cheaper. This has happened before with the cotton and clothing industries during the earlier part of the last century, we just moved on to bigger and better industries.

Ireland has the fastest growing economy in the EEC and have brought in immigrants just like the other EEC Countries have had to.

There will never be 0% employment in any country, your English speaking wife should go to college and train for a new career to better herself and earn a higher salary, there is a way out for her to acheive something much better. The immigrants comming in who do not speak English will suffer doing the menial tasks until they too train for to better themselves, they need a menial job more than your wife does.

All this globalization is spreading the wealth of the world into the countries that want and need it. In so so doing it is locally integrating cultures and nations from around the world to make the world a safer and better place to live and hopefully eradicate racism in the process.

It is the future children of these immigrants who will be Born Irish (European) who will contribute fully to the Irish economy so it is an investment in the Children and Future of Ireland.

By the way from all over the world I also know lots of Immigrant Businessmen, Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, computer techs, University Professors, etc. Many immigrants are already way ahead of most people so It is wrong to categorize immigrants as only just being able to do menial Jobs.

People want to pay less for the same manpower, as long this is possible people will do it.

You should have a problem with the people employing them if any at all.

Another point: The immigrants that work are welcome in my eyes, its the ones that claim benefits and housing without working I find offencive.

It comes down to values. Much of Eastern Europe operates on wildly different values then those of the UK.

It is hard to believe the UK government allow all this. I was home in Australia recently and we all killed ourselves laughing at the UK's naive approach to immigration. We caught on long ago.

So, these workers sleep out doors and eat fresh air?

What abuot the tax they pay?

No they come speaking a few English words. I worked nights wid a polish man just him and me, and it drove me crazy try to explain things again and again, i worked in a care home, i was having to do the work of two people, the residents couldn't even understand him it's madness. I hurt my back because he didn't understand something.

Have YOU ever considered working abroad mate. If you can't beat em, join em!

Its the way of the world that people are travelling all over to work.
You'd be surprised at how marketable you will be working as a British expat all over the world - regardless of your profession.

Observing the problems illegal immigration has caused America, I would say that the UK should take care of their own first, then help others. And by help, I mean offer opportunnities, not hand outs.

i think this country should think about looking after people born here before immigrants we are only a small country surley we are going to run out of room soon or later . there are many british people who need jobs and housing but its impossile for them to get adaquate help. and the immigrants who are all ready here should speak english . if you are going to live in someone elses country at least be prepaird to act ln a sivile manner

Good point, same thing is happening all over the world. We can allow the workers if the laws are enforced.

Close the borders completely, we're full.

I agree with you 100%

Check your history! At which point do you think we 'allowed' immigration? It has happened since the dawn of time and always will. It is necessary for the development of our world and our nation. Don't just regurgitate what you read in the trash papers! Who are 'they' exactly? Talk about stereotyping!

There are countless jobs that can't be filled either because people don't want to work or can't either through disability or sheer laziness. Immigrants, who I welcome, help fill that gap and redress the falling birth rate. Without them our NHS would certainly grind to a halt. Remember, not so long ago they said the same about the Irish, coming over here and taking our jobs, not contributing to our society, sending their money back home. Were yours or your wife's ancestors one of that group? If not then undoubtably some of your friends and aquaintences will be. People in glass houses...?

It is easy to point the finger at others when things are not going so well rather than looking closer to home for answers! That is when extremists get hold, like the BNP. Think about what the Nazi's did to the jews and many other groups of people. They spouted propaganda and played on peoples difficulties (lack of jobs/money/housing) by victimising them and making them the problem. It then made it far easier when it came to exterminating them as they were dehumanised. If you ever get the chance to see some Nazi WWII propaganda, take out the word 'Jew' and insert muslim, polish, black etc. The similarities are scarey. Indeed, look at BNP propaganda today, and insert the word 'Jew'.

I just wish people would think before they speak and not just spout off media nonsense.

I am not comparing you a nazi either!! Just asking you to look at these issues from a different angle. People have always tried to find a reason for societies problems since time began. It is usually the minority or 'new' groups within that society that get the blame. Don't be part of that mindless group that victimises and demonises other groups of human beings, just for doing what you do and wanting what you want, which is a better life.

I cannot believe you people defending the illegal aliens in this post.

The person placing the question is the victim!!!!!

Did you even read HIS POST??

Gholam, instead of criticizing the person and insulting his wife, you need to take some reading comprehension classes yourself. Nowhere in his post does he say that the illegal immigrants speak any language OTHER than English.

P.S. If you wish to be an English teacher, I suggest you do so. It has nothing to do with this forum.

This question and indeed some of the answers would ideally be posed on myverdict.net, an exercise in direct democracy. Free, anonymous, with debates, votes and results at local to international level the site asks for reasoned, coherent argument. You can even change your vote if the arguments persuade.

No!

No , but it will make wonder who in your Government is
getting paid to ignore this problem.

Scotland is the same, the immigrants are working for lower than the minimum wage, recently the local chicken factory was out on strike to enable the polish workers to get equal pay but during the strike the polish workers remained working? where is the sense in that.

I have nothing against immigrant workers.
What I do have a problem with is that last year we were informed that 20'000 unskilled polish workers were coming to the UK to fill jobs. With so many in this country "unable to find work" why cant they fill the jobs?
The government should have booted their lazy a**es back into work before opening the doors to migrant workers.
Its a good job we have migrant workers to pay tax and keep these idle b*****ds that refuse to work.

yes

None of the money goes back into your economy... 1/taxes, 2/property rent, 3/food - is it not enough? I feel sorry for your wife, but I do not believe she could not get any job, because of Eastern and Central Europe competition. Employers prefer natives, as much as they can - it is natural - and they employ immigrants just if they have better qualification, work ethic etc.

they send it home to pay for the rest of the family to come over and before you know it their taking up all the housing stock, stretching nhs education, and welfare resources

There must be something wrong with your wife if these people who's first language is NOT English can get a job over her. Tell her to get her fat lazy *** into gear and get a job.
Ddthrelky or whatever your name is, take a look at your own English language before you insult others! I counted at least 5 grammatical errors in you small sentence.
