TEFL - where to work!?

Ideally I would like to work in Western Europe (I am from the U.K.) in France perhaps, but have heard that the job market is better in Asia. Does anybody work in these places or others who can offer advice?

If you have a TEFL certification and an EU passport it will be easier to get a job in W. Europe, but know that unemployment rates are fairly high in France, especially for young people with little experience in the work place. (it's really hard to fire people in France, so companies are reluctant to hire people) But, as for Asia, it's amazingly easy to get a job in ESL. Your best bet would be China, Korea, or Japan. If you're looking for more money, go for Korea. They will pay you well (I made more there than I had teaching in the US), they pay for your plane flights, your rent, and your utilities. (this is the case at about 99% of the schools in Korea) And, the cost of living is ridiculously low for a developed country. (I could eat out, a full meal for $10 (US) and that was expensive for Korea- most of the time it was more like $5.) China pays you less money (but usually at least twice as much as an average person there) and they don't always pay for your plane flights, but they always provide an apt and pay for the utilities. Japan will pay you relatively well, but the cost of living is much higher than Korea or China (it's more like what you see in W. Europe) and most places in Japan won't pay for your plane ticket, and you will have money taken out of your pay each month to pay for your apt. (they provide an apt, you just pay the rent for it) You have to be VERY careful when choosing a school, as there are some really awful ones out there. I would suggest using a recruiter. I used Footprints, they were really good. At the very least, go to www.daveseslcafe.com. They have job listings, and forums where you can ask about a specific school/city. If you have a TEFL certificate, you should make more money and have more job opportunities. A warning, all 3 countries tend to hire people of non-Asian descent, and they will most likely not hire you if you are not a native English speaker. They also tend to be somewhat predjudiced towards older individuals (over about 45-50). If you fall into one of those categories (or all of them), there will be a school out there that will hire you, you will just have to look harder. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
have a good friend heading off to korea in July to tefl at a school there contact me with your e address and I'll ask her to tell you how it goes. She will be working in Seoul.
I spent to yrs working in the south pacific...I would stay away from there. I was in Am. Samoa....pay is low ,living conditions not to good, resources not good.If you choose to go to pacific..try Guam, or Mariana Islands
