Do Americans Often Learn French? |
I'm Canadian and I've been learning French in school since grade 1. French, of course, is one of the two official languages here and it's good for getting a job in the civil service. In the States, do people often learn French, and for which reasons. Is French instruction there very France oriented, because the French I learned was very Quebec oriented. Tell me about your experiences. Most American schools do not start offering languages until junior high / middle school. Most children do not start considering taking a language until high school so as to get credits to graduate and have a nice-looking college application. There are some special elementary schools that teach a foreign language early on, but those are rare and not the majority. French, as well as German, Spanish, and Latin, is commonly offered in all schools and I believe it is more France-French oriented. Many schools offer French as an elective...but the majority of students in the US take Spanish as their foreign language. I never took French - don't have much use for it over here. Even though I'm actually 1/4 French Canadian (how funny is that). I am fluent in French. Yes, the instruction was mostly about France, and the accent was Parisian. That helped me a lot when I spent a summer there living the culture and only speaking in French. I do love Canada, though, and in MOntreal I do speak as much French as I can. no I took French for 3 yrs in high school...I wanted to broaden my horizons more so I took Spanish my senior year...I dont however rememer as much French as I would like I'm taking french and its very France oriented but the majority of the students in my school take spanish my school has about 5 spanish professors and only one for any other language Took three years of it. Don't remember as much as I would like but I can read all the signs in Quebec and understand them. Plus I can pronounce them too. Attendez le feu vert -wait for the green light. Ralentissez (sp?) slow down Merci pour les deux points! |
