How long will it take for me to learn french if i go to live in france?

i have some french, not a helpful amount though. i know basic things and a little more but i can't really understand well. i have to move to paris soon because my dad has to move with his job.

how long will it take for me to understand everything that is said to me (even just the general point to what they are saying) anb speak a little. i'm worried that because so many people speak english in paris that when they see i don't speak french, they will speak english! how am i going to pick it up, by jut being there? (no classes)

i'm 16 by the way, apparently it's a little easier to learn a language younger rather than older, rightttt?

Three years if you're serious! Otherwise twenty years...

Depends how smart you are :S

You can purposely hang out in the areas of Paris, Lyon, Marseilles or any other major city in France where English or foreign languages in general are not spoken. This will be good exposure for you. It is also good to make every attempt to immerse yourself in French culture and the French way of doing things as much as possible. This will really help you to assimiliate as quickly as possible. Buy food in the marketplace, sit in cafes and listen to the sounds around you, watch TV programs or listen to the radio and see how much you can understand without the benefit of a dictionary or translation device. The posibilities are endless. Bonne chance et bon voyage!

Hi well I am living in Spain right now and I have been living here for a year but I am going to stay for 2 years because I haven't picked up the language yet but I am close so I 'd say about 2 years It depends really on how fast you learn. I also have this problem of people automatically speakin in english to me just tell them to speak in french because you are practising. Hope this helps and enjoy Paris. rmc

I think you will need to do classes or at the minimum get one of those language tapes.

It doesn't matter how long you are there for unless someone is explaining to you in English what was said everytime someone speaks in French you are never going to understand and never going to learn...

You can listen to the tapes in your spare time and they're supposed to be quite effective. Once you can speak the basics it will be easy for you to pick up the spelling and grammar.

Bon Voyage! :)

If you take intensive course for year, you will slightly understand and can express yourself.
I think best way is go there and stay there for one year.
That will makes you lots difference.
You think people speak in English when you do not understand French. People don't!!!
Because people do not speak English very well.
So as England, people do not speak French very well (even Little..)
It is loads worth for you to go there and learn.

well not really....16 is consider old already should have though of that before 12
anyway I'm 19 and picked up portugues and italian last year...I can safely say I can have a conversation in portugues to a fair ammount....I practice italiace often I guess I can get by if I really needed.

french is next but I say it will be 3 years before I go there and I master iitalian and portugues.

for you a year and you should do fine

go to school,,,I went to mexico for a year and learn spanish in a year
