Is a Communications Degree a worthless degree?

I'm a junior in college studying communications with emphasis in public relations and photography, and a minor in international business. Whenever I tell people that I'm a communications major they act like it's a pointless degree and I'm not going to find a good job. i've also had 3 semesters of statistics and 3 semesters of french. ive also been really involved on campus such as worked for the admissions office, campus news station, done service projects, and i studied abroad in france for a semester. I'm thinking of switching my major to public relations because it seems like that is a more marketable major. I was also wondering if you would recommend getting a full minor in statistics vs. only 3 semesters of it, or if 3 semesters is enough to make me more marketable? I'm not entirely sure what I want to do once I'm done with college, or what options there are for a communications major, but I want to have a good job in a city once I'm done. Suggestions? Is my degree strong?

A Communications Degree is considered a soft science and most hard science people distrust those who hold them. The mainstream media has developed a reputation that is worse than drug dealers, pimps and lawyers. I would respectfully suggest that you make the switch you are contemplating.

The joke is that we need comm and psychology majors. Without them where would we get quality secretaries and assistants?

The problem is that so many people take that major that you're just a needle in a haystack. I've lost count of how many comm majors I've met who ended up as a real estate agent or somebodies assistant.

To answer your question, it isn't worthless...but it also isn't worth much. A comm degree, to many, ranks you right about a high school graduate. Whether or not that is fair, perception is reality.

Now, if you are fluent in french and have a keen understanding of statistics, that will definitely set you apart. I would make that leap to public relations and if it isn't too much, get the minor in statistics. The minor in statistics will make you stand out. I see that and I'll assume your smart. Seriously, math isn't a strong-point for a lot of people so you'll have recruiters thinking you're smarter than them and therefore qualified for the job.

My opinion: switch majors and get the minor in stats.

I know somebody who had this degree and has a great career in advertising, and another who is an Ivy League professor- it isn't worthless. People think that about a lot of degrees, especially in fields they know nothing about. The choice is yours if you prefer PR, which is also interesting.

The minor in stats- do it- if you decide to change fields later this will make it easier for you. If you are almost there, just finish that minor, it will do nothing but improve your chances!

A college degree is what you make of it, many physics grads start as assistant somethings, too. But a marketing, PR or real estate assistant can be a 'try out' position, meaning that it's promotable. Do well and you won't be an assistant for very long. Try not to take jobs that are not promotable,

I am thinking about switching my major from english to comm. ONce I did some research I found out that you can get some great jobs... esp w/ the government! They have some PR jobs that start at $75,000 a year and go up to over $100!!! And if you work for the govenment you will have a great retirement plan!!
