The least expensive housing is in small rural or remote towns. This is also where it is most difficult to find permanent work (although seasonal work is usually fairly easy to come by in regional areas).

If you need both, the best option might be to go for a regional town where there is employment and affordable accommodation. Inland is generally less expensive than coastal areas. Tasmania might be a good option - lots of small towns within a reasonable distance of cities and still plenty of affordable accommodation options.
