I have sacked the job in and am off to Australia to travel and work next week for a year, any advice?

Things to do, places to see, places where there is work, places with good surf/watersports, good nightlife, nice beaches, best cheap accomodation options (for 3 males), things to watch out for i.e crimes etc.

Any advice would be appreciated? Many thanks

For all three - great beaches, water sports, great surf and good nightlife you cant go past the Gold Coast, Queensland. Seriously. You can get cheapish accommodation in some places in and or around Gold Coast you just have to look at the right areas. Maybe south side of Logan or Beenleigh (sp?) which is only 20min from the Gold Coast. Afternoons and or weekends after work you can head to the Gold Coast easily. Try realestate.com.au

There can be some violence on the Gold Coast tho so dont walk around alone drunk! Always be with friends at night but during the day its fine. Or just dont go to the Gold Coast at night party in Brisbane (10min from Logan) and play on the Gold Coast during the day for water sports/surf and the beach. A lot of Brisbane residents do that.

If you did stay at Logan or Brisbane you also have the option on the weekend to visit the Sunshine coast which also has amazing beaches.

Of course if you want the more relaxed atmosphere Sunshine Coast would be the go for everything you mentioned to but I dont know about night life there but Im sure it would be fine.

Watch out for our rips - a few tourists die each year from the - ever caught in one don't swim against it! Just go with it or swim diagonal against it!

If you decide to go further North ie Cairns - kinda good night life in one or two small areas but more countryish and 'boring' for some but lovely nice beaches and beautiful relaxed area for those that like that but you do have to watch the crocs! No playing in the swamps or creeks! And the jellyfish in the surf!
But that area would be low on crime and cheap accommodation.

Just look at the map of australia, on the globe you are upside down so all the blood will run to your head.only kidding have a good life.

A pal did this for a couple of years. Had to take a break in the USA to get another visa. She loved it. Worked in call centres all over the place.

not been there but enjoy it

Have only been to Sydney so far but we were there New Years eve 2006 watching the fireworks and its a great happy event. We went mainly to see the cricket so we also had a day out at Bowral, where Sir Donald Bradman used to play. Wether or not you like cricket, the aussies do and appreciate your interest. Accomodation in backpackers anywhere is very cheap and food is fabulous and a lot less than here. Have a fantastic time and we wont blame you if you decide to stay out there! If you can, take the time to fly to Auckland, New Zealand, the loveliest city in the world!

Watch out for the Big Bugs, Snakes & Spiders,

It's expensive now.
I love the beaches.
Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast.
Whitsunday Islands.
Perth and Sydney.

heres a bit of a travel tip if you are coming to our country
In australia you dont "sack the job in" it has a totally diffrent meaning here to get "the sack" means that you were fired.
If you left you"chucked it in".
As for cheap accomodation you say theres 3 males EXCELLENT yous can stay at my place :)
enjoy your stay you dont have to worry too much about crime we are mostly alright here

bring ya board, leg rope, wax, esky, and sawnoff.

Buy yourselft a Greyhound bus pass. They have lots of different ones for budget travellers/backpackers ie one year unlimited kilometers or so many thousand kilometers in a certain period of time. The other option is to buy you own vehicle (especially given that there is 3 of you) and sell it when you are finished.
There is a network of cheap back-packer hostels around Australia. Another option is caravan parks (most have some on sight caravans or you could camp there in a tent).
If you go up the west coast of Australia, there will be lots of beaches where surfers and others camp for free.
I would definately google 'life saving Australia' - you'll get heaps of information on all the beaches in every state. If you get "in" with the surfie network you will find out everything you want to know.
Hope you have a great time!
